Kenosha, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2010 census, the population was 362, up from 328 at the 2000 census. The Kenosha metropolitan area had a population of 1,426 as of July 2013. The town was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1837 and incorporated as a city in 1860. It became part of Milwaukee after that city's incorporation. The first settler in what is now Kenosha County was Lars Olson, who arrived on December 27, 1837 with his family from Västerås, Sweden. He and his wife Maria started out living on an estate near present-day Racine while their children Björn (baptized Gustavus), Ingeborg (Gertrud), Olof (Olaus) and Erik were born there between 1838 and 1840. On January 24, 1846 Lars died at age 80 years old at the farm he had bought two miles east of modern-day Oshkosh where his son Björn still lives today; he had also donated land for a schoolhouse to be built there on it. The townsite developed slowly because early settlers were not interested in founding settlements near rivers or other infrastructure they would need to trade goods with other travelers or farmers for food and materials they needed to build their homes and businesses. This led to only one store opening until 1870 when Jacob Reuther opened a store on Main Street which quickly became known as "the heart of the town." In 1865, when Milwaukee was annexed into Chicago Territory due to its large German population, Kenosha's city status ended but it continued to be governed by its own Board of Alderman who answered only to Mayor Ditlieb von Koch who resided in downtown Milwaukee during most day-to-day operations although Council meetings were held intermittently at different locations throughout the community including one called "the Mansion" which later served as City Hall - until annexation into Milwaukee again occurred in 1890 . Racine resident John Hargrave operated what is now Roche’s grocery business side by side with von Koch’s department store facility located across Capitol Drive from City Hall beginning November 1st1890 until April 15th1910 when Roche’s closed down due largely to prohibitionism brought about by new mayor John Chisholm who pushed through legislation attempting to control liquor sales within city limits . Today most people remember Kenosha primarily for its large lakefront retail district that includes many stores alongWisconsin Avenue just south of I-94 exit 34A known locally as "The Ave". Other local attractions include Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church dating back over 160 years serving both parishioners within Kenosha and those traveling through town during services conducted either inside or outside the building numerous times each week; Pioneer Village sets aside dedicated acres next door exclusively for historical purposes open Monday thru Friday 9am TO 4pm Admission is free; KenosHA Park offers year round enjoyment including playground equipment available for rent à la carte rates starting at $5/hour/playground; various arts & crafts shows are staged annually throughout October & November typically drawing hundreds if not thousands spectators during each performance culminating with parade down O'Hare Rd ending up around State Fairgrounds
