The town was named after John Kenosha, an American Revolutionary War soldier. The area that is now Kenosha was first populated by Native Americans. In the 18th century, people from Ohio started to settle in this area and they called it Waupaca County. In 1794, the area became part of Racine County. In 1836, Racine County merged with Milwaukee County to form Wisconsin Territory. The town of Kenosha was born in this territory. When Wisconsin became a state in 1889, Kenosha became one of its first towns. The town had a population of about 100 people when it incorporation into the state. In 1914, the population reached 1,000 people and it remained high until 1937 when it dropped to 600 people due to World War II-related factors. After World War II ended, the population increased again until 1968 when it hit 2,000 people again due to growth in agricultural production in central Wisconsin and other areas east of Milwaukee Bayou
