In 1958, the university opened its doors to students from all over the United States through an agreement with Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois; this program was known as "Western Education Exchange". The university has grown steadily since then – becoming one of North America's leading research institutions according to Forbes magazine – making it one of Kenosha's most important economic drivers. Today, KenosHA dominates much of eastern Milwaukee County as a bedroom community for Milwaukee while preserving some rural character by remaining mostly white until well into recent decades; however many African Americans have moved into the town since World War II when housing discrimination banned them from other areas near major metropolitan centers like Chicago or Detroit

It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.The first white people to live in what is now Kenosha County were six men from New England who settled on a farm near present-day Plymouth in 1838. They named their land "Kenosha" after one of their towns in that region. In 1845, David Laughlin purchased 1,752 acres (6 km²) of land north of Milwaukee and east of Cedar Point on the Fox River for $1,000. He sold it to George Hennepin for $5 per acre ($10 per km²). In 1847–48, John Fitch built a mill on the river where it joins the Mississippi River. This mill became one of the largest in Wisconsin and helped develop agriculture around Milwaukee. In 1865–66 Charles Goodyear founded Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company on his farm southeast of downtown Kenosha with two partners: James Prentice and Franklin Dyson Jr.. The company grew quickly and by 1870 had become one of America's leading tire manufacturers. In 1916 Goodyear merged with another company to form Bridgestone Corporation which enjoyed great success until its stock value crashed in 1929 following World War II when regulations changed regarding air quality control measures mandated by the US War Department
