Kaukauna is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Kaukauna is part of the Kenosha–Waukesha–Ashtabula, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is included in the Milwaukee-Wisconsin–Edison Combined Statistical Area. The first European to see Kaukauna was Jean Nicolet who charted its location on his Voyage d'en France in 1624. The town was founded by Dutch fur traders in 1701 as "Verwijderingse Scheepswerf", meaning " Leaving Shipwrights". The name may be derived from one of two possible sources: either from an Algonquian word meaning "water where people go fishing", or from French cote de la journée, meaning "day's end" or "a point east of the river mouth". The first settler to arrive in what is now Kaukauna were John Dyck and his family who arrived about 1800. They built a cabin on a bend in the river that became known as Dyck's Corner after them. By 1836, there were over 30 log homes standing around this bend and 8 other small settlements had been created within 5 years around it all! Other early settlers included David gunsberg (1827), Johannes Venter (1828), Peter Wessels (1829), Hendrik Frieslandt (1831) and Johann Gottlieb Koppevelt (January 2, 1832). These pioneers started out clearing land for farming with their oxen and dogs which they then sold to others looking to settle down here permanently. From these beginnings Kaukauna began to grow into an established community with several stores, schools and churches soon formed! It wasn't until 1854 when Samuel Morse contacted some Menominee Indian chiefs about starting a telegraph line between Chicago and Milwaukee through their country so they could get news faster! This connection would change many lives forever! In 1860, Kaukauna voted to become a town! On July 10th of that year residents met at City Hall to ratify this decision by giving speeches supporting their choice! After months of discussion local leaders decided on a plans for the new town including creating streets, setting up sewers etcetera. This incorporation also authorized building schoolhouses which opened September 15th 1861 inside what is now City Hall!! Today we still enjoy street names like Morse Street & Main Street honoring our namesake!!! In 1865 Mayor Heckel appointed Augustus Payson as Censor/Editor for The Democrat newspaper!!! In 1870 another group bought The Democrat from Mayor Heckel &Keep developed it into today's Wisconsin Press Herald newspaper

Kaukauna is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,688 at the 2010 census. Kaukauna has been governed by a mayor and a village board since 1857. The current mayor is Donny Kapp and the village board is made up of 6 members who are elected twice annually. The town was first settled in 1857 by Reverend Julius Heineman and his family. Kaukauna post office was established in 1859, and the first store opened on Main Street in 1860. In 1863 the Heinemans moved to what is now the incorporated town of La Crosse. Kaukauna's first school was built on Logan Street in 1865-66 and it served gradeschool through high school until 1953 when it became part of the La Crosse School District. It would remain open as an academy until 1982 when it closed due to budget cuts. In 1870 John Ladd set up a sawmill on the river near present day Wausau after finding land south of present day Kaukauna for sale. The mill continued operating until 1940 when it went out of business due to competition from other mills around la Crosse sponsored by De Pere Power Company which had acquired ownership of the mill site from Ladd’s parents about that time The townspeople began purchasing property west of Main Street beginning in1885 primarily because they wanted to build churches or schools but also because they believed that this area would be valuable for farming as well Kaukauna's annexation into La Crosse took place on November 15th, 1907 with all residents voting unanimously to become one community Kapp became its first Mayor In 1916Joseph Fenton bought 2 lots adjacent to then existing home #1 on Main Street for $2 per acre giving Kaukauna its first farmhouse
