Kaukauna, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census, making it the fifth-most populous municipality in Racine County. Kaukauna was founded by Danish immigrants in 1847 and incorporated as a village in 1851. It became a city on July 1, 1957. The first European settlers to Kaukauna were Danish fishermen who arrived there during the late 18th century from Skagen on Zealand. They erected small huts for themselves and their families near what is now downtown Kaukauna before beginning to cultivate land around 1790 or 1791. The first permanent settler was Peder Rasmussen, who arrived in 1793 and built a log cabin on the present site of downtown Kaukauna. Rasmussen's descendants carried on his business until 1898 when they sold their holdings to John Kappelman and his nephew Peter Kappelman for $2,500 cash plus 20 acres (8 ha) of woodland adjacent to their farmstead east of town center which they developed into an open-air shopping mall known as "Petersen's Prairie" today. Kaukauna's origins can be traced back even further; according to one story, a group of Scandinavian fur traders who had been exploring North America stopped at what is now Hauge Island off the coast of Norway en route to Alaska during Christmas week in 1814 while seeking passage home across Canada for their families back home: when asked about where they were going, one of the traders replied that he “was bound for America’s great land [Skagway] but I should like some information about this place called Kaukauna” After disembarking from their ship at Sitka Harbor on December 28th they set out upriver towards what is today Hauge Island under orders from Captain Cook himself! Unfortunately for them only two days later news reached him that Cook had successfully crossed over into Canada! In any case these initial pioneers - most notably Rasmus Nielsen - continued farming and fishing along with trading goods with indigenous peoples until 1800 or so A.D., when white settlement began encroaching upon what is now Kaukuana proper via fur trade routes opening up along the northern edge of Hudson Bay In early June 1850 James Fenton platted what are today downtownau kauna plat map area bordered by 2nd Street west, 3rd Street east & 4thStreet north; it included partof present day City Hall Park bounded by S Main St NW corner & Walnut St SE corner
Kaukauna is located in the heart of the Wisconsin Badlands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town was founded in 1855 by German immigrants and became a lumber center for the area. Kaukauna was named after Otto Kaukauna, a fur trader who lived in what is now the city of Milwaukee during the 1840s. The first settler to arrive in Kaukauna was Jacob Duchausen, who arrived on July 4, 1855. In 1860, Kaukauna had a population of 20 residents and it grew to 100 residents by 1865. By 1870, there were 300 residents living in Kaukauna. In 1901, Kaukuana had a population of 2200 people and it remained at this level until 1959 when it reached its current size.
