The Kaukauna Knife Company was founded in 1887 by John C. Kaukauna and his brother, Harry. The company became one of the leading knife manufacturers in Wisconsin,producing a wide variety of knives including hand-helds, camp and fishing knives, hunting and outdoor gear, kitchen tools and more. In 1916, the company merged with Cutlery Company of America to form Cutlery Corporation. The Cutlery Corporation produced a wide variety of knife products until it was purchased by Wenge & Associates in 1984. The current owner is Knivesource Inc., headquartered in Madison, WI. The history of knives can be traced back to when man first began using them for food production and shelter. From earliest times people have used sharpened stone blades as primary tools for slicing meat and other goods (Fowler 1979). By 4000 BC humans had developed some form of bone or wooden sheath that allowed them to carry small amounts of food with them on long trips (Goudreau 1978). With the development of agriculture around 3000 BC began the need for better transportation methods so farmers could bring their crops to market (Dixon 1971). Eventually knifes came into use as farming implements due to their ability to slice through dense plants with ease (Goudreau 1978) . Beginning in the early 1800’s there were different types of knives being made available on the market such as single-edged swords and carving knives. However, most early knife makers focused on producing hand-held instruments rather than creating full-fledged blade models like later knife manufacturers did. Asknives became increasingly popular within society during this time period they were also becoming more expensive which led many people to prefer traditional edged weapons over newfangledKnife technology (Fowler 1979). During World War II many Americans turned to knifes as an important tool for warfare because they were much easier and faster than swords or spears (Hancock 1974). This resulted in a increase in production at variousknife companies throughout America due to pent up demand from both military veterans AND civilians who needed quality Knifes for their everyday tasks(Dixon 1971). During this time period several innovations occurred that would forever changeknife design including: 1) laquerization – A process where anodic protection is appliedto a piece of metal so that it will not corrode (this results in a high levelof resistance against rusting) 2) straight edge – A typeof razor blade that was first developed during World War I as an improvement over rasps 3) filigree – A technique used primarily on daggers whereby delicate patterns are created alongthe edge OfBlade

The first Europeans to visit Kaukauna were the French in 1642 and they named it La Prairie du Wisconsin. The town was founded by Captain Friedrich Wilhelm Schaefer on land that he received from the Wabash River. The first store was built on opening day of 1836. In 1847, a post office was established and in 1850, a school was opened. A sawmill and grist mill were built in 1865 and 1870 respectively. The population of Kaukauna increased from 10 to 30 by 1880. The first telephone line was laid down in 1886 and the electric light system was installed in 1893. The flour mill closed in 1924 but the sawmill continued to operate until 1957. In 1941, Kaukauna became a city with its own government while the flour mill continued to be operated as an agricultural enterprise until it closed in 1987
Kaukauna, Wisconsin is a small town located in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Kaukauna is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. It lies on the east side of the Milwaukee River and is bordered by Racine to the south and north, Menomonee Falls to the east, and Waukesha to the west. The first European settlers in Kaukauna were French traders who arrived in 1763. The first German settlers arrived in 1836. In 1855, a sawmill was built on the river near present-day Kaukauna Elementary School. The mill operated until it was destroyed by fire in 1902. A grocery store and post office were also built around this time. A flour mill was built on the river in 1911 by George Hirschfeld Sr., an early settler from Germany who had purchased land along the river for cultivation purposes. The mill operated until it was destroyed by fire in 1942. A second flour mill was built on the same site in 1951 by John Jorgensen Jr., another early settler from Germany who had purchased land along the river for agriculture purposes; this mill operated until it was destroyed by fire in 1965. A housing development called "Meadowbrook" began construction near present-day Hauppauge Lake Drive and Klock Rd., adjacent to Rice Lake High School, between 1984 and 1985 as a replacement for what had been an agricultural village called "Norden". Meadowbrook soon lost its popularity due to difficulties with funding and rising prices of real estate; however, it remains one of Kaukauna's most popular attractions today because of its historical significance and picturesque setting .

Kaukauna, Wisconsin was founded by the Holland family in 1837. The town was named for Kaukauna River, which flows through the community. Kaukauna became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1961 and has since grown to include adjoining towns of Menomonee Falls and Appleton. The first settlers to Kaukauna were farmers who started arrive in 1837. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses in the village and it had a population of around 200 people. By 1925, the population had increased to 1,000 people and Kaukauna began growing rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River Delta Plain. In 1961, Kaukauna became a census-designated place (CDP). Since its creation as an CDP, Kaukauna has experienced many changes. All of the surrounding towns have either been annexed or merged into Kaukauna proper over time. The most recent annexation happened in 2006 when Menomonee Falls annexed Appleton. This merger made Appleton one of the largest communities within Kaufmanan
Kaukauna was first settled by the Menomonee people in the late 1800s. They built their first village on a small island in what is now Kaukauna Lake. The Menomonee were eventually pushed out of Kaukauna by the Chippewa Indians, and the area was occupied by various Native American tribes before European exploration began. In 1834, Captain George Vancouver discovered and named Kaukauna after his ship, HMS Discovery. He awarded this spot to Lieutenant Samuel Kendall for his services during an exploratory mission from Ottawa, Canada. The town developed slowly until World War II when it became a major military base due to its strategic location on America's east coast. It has since declined but remains an important community with a rich history.
