Kaukauna is a town and village in the town of Kaukauna, Brown County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–East Troy, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Kaukauna derives from "kwáakwái", meaning "the place where the water runs fast". The first settler in Kaukauna was John Pfeiffer in 1846. A post office called Kwikwiakonka was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first school in Kaukauna was built on the site of present-day Hauppauge High School (now Hauppauge Middle School) in 1866. In 1871, a railroad track ran through Kaukauna and made it an easy stop for travelers heading westward to Green Bay. That same year saw the introduction of electricity to Kaukauna when one man erected a small wire fence around his home to generate power from the sun. Electricity became common throughout Kaukuana by 1915 when a substation was built near the village limits. In 1922, a community hall and grocery store were erected along Main Street by local residents; this facility served as both primary social center and commercial district for the village until it burned down in 1984. In 1924, construction began on what would become today's Community Center; this building served as both cultural destination and administrative hub for all aspects of Kaukauna life until it too burned down in 1994. The Village Museum opened its doors on October 15th 1996 after years of planning by then-Mayor Stanislaus Gierebner with support from Village Trustees Cliff Jansen (left), Don Nussbaum (middle), Jeff Cook (right). The museum functions as an educational resource for residents, tourists and others interestedin learning about how everyday life has been lived within the boundaries of current day Hauppauge Township since 1896! The town of Kaukauna, Wisconsin was first settled in 1854 by Danish immigrants. The community grew rapidly due to the opening of the Milwaukee Railroad in 1856 and its connection to Chicago. In 1871, Kaukauna became a city. The population of Kaukauna peaked at over 10,000 in 1907 but decreased to 7,500 by 1959. Today, the population is less than 1,000. Kaukauna was originally named Hennepin after General John A. Hennepin who fought in the American Revolution and later served as United States Ambassador to Norway from 1797-1800. The town was renamed Kaukauna in 1854 for Captain Ole Christensen Kaap (1810-1892), a Norwegian immigrant who had founded the city of Milwaukee in 1846 and served as its first mayor from 1861-1865. Captain Christensen Kaap donated land for the town which he named after his father and uncle, bothof whom had also immigrated to America earlier that year. Kaukauna's growth continued when the Milwaukee & Saint Paul Railway arrived in 1863 and connected it with Chicago via what is now known as Highway 612 east of town. With this new transportation link came increased business opportunities for Kaukauna residents which led to more homes being built and more people moving into the community throughout its early years. The arrival of World War I brought an extra surge in development activity as many people sought employment within miles of Chicago or other major metropolitan areas during those difficult times. This boom period ended about 1918 when steel production began declining in America due to technological advancements that made manufacturing cheaper overseas). However, Haukinia’s economy did not completely suffer because grocery stores continued opening up throughout Wisconsin until well into the 1970s despite falling prices for farm goods globally). AsHAusWisconsins History Museum explains: “In spite of sharp declines nationally during World War I – particularly with respect to steel production – Haukinia’s economy did not go bankrupt; on the contrary it prospered thanks largely to expanding Grocery Stores throughoutWI even though prices for some agricultural commodities fell sharply around 1916…..
