Kaukauna, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. Kaukauna is part of the Green Bay–West Bend–St Paul, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Kaukauna was Father Pierre- Jean de La Salle in 1679, who named it for Saint Louis. In 1836, the town had a population of 462 residents and was established as a village by order of Lieutenant Governor John Cavanaugh. On July 1, 1838, the village merged with neighboring towns Kerensky and Waukesha to form what is now Kaukauna Township under the jurisdiction of Green Bay County. The name “Kaukauna” is Algonquian and means "place where fishing netters set up their traps." In 1915, World War I veteran Luther Sorenson donated land to build a veterans' hospital in Kaukauna which became known as SS Luther Hospital (now Veterans Affairs Medical Center). After World War II ended and many veterans returned from overseas military service there were more needs for healthcare so on October 15th 1955 President Eisenhower signed an executive order creating Countywide Health Services Authority which would manage county wide health care resources including mental health care services social security benefits public housing nursing home assistance

In addition, Kaukauna has several contributing properties that include: Haupts Prairie School House (1896) on Haupts Road; Beardsley House(1900) on Beardsley Drive; White Settlement Farmstead on White Settlement Road; Wenzel Adobe(1912) on Wenzel Drive; Carpenter Adobe(1920) on Carpenter Drive; Ellerbee House(1922)(now used as a daycare); Lauchry House(1945)(now used as an apartment complex); Swan Lake Campground.(1972-2010)[1];[2] [3]. Most importantly, Kaukauna's rich history can be seen through its people who have contributed to its development including those who came before them such as Nathan Sorenson who arrived in 1854 and continued to farming until his death in 1915. Others that have helped contribute to Kaukauna's growth are Roy Prentice who served as Mayor from 1984-1986; Karen Kappeler who was elected Mayor for the first time in 2006 and re-elected two years later; Jay Duchamp who served as Clerk for twelve years from 1995-2005; Linda Schuman who is currently serving her fourth term as mayor after being elected during November 4th 2018 General Election[4];[5] Tommy Walters Jr.,[6],and Dragan Zajac.[7].
The first European to visit Kaukauna, Wisconsin was Captain John James Cook in 1779. The town was founded by the Menominee people in 1827. The first post office was established in 1829. Kaukauna is a small village located on the shores of Lake Michigan.
