The town site was surveyed by Captain John Fitch in 1789 and named for John Jacob Astor's father-in-law, Augustus Cuthbert Kaukauna. In 1836, Isaac Noyes platted what became Kaukauna Township on land that he had bought from the Sauks and Menominee Nation. The first store opened there in 1837. In 1865, railroad entrepreneur George Westfall built a line from Green Bay to Duluth and new stations at Allerton and Oconomowoc; this line extended into Kaukauna Township. When Wisconsin Rapids was incorporated as a village in 1868, Kaukauna became its second city; but when Racine got incorporation as an independent city in 1889, Kaufmanna remained its second city until 1907 when it merged with Racine to form Milwaukee along with other towns within Milwaukee County including Waukesha and Wauskeen.[1] In 1906, all but two blocks of downtown were destroyed by fire caused by an incendiary bomb dropped over Milwaukee during World War I which damaged many buildings downtown including KFCs then called Jarry Park which still stands today on North Side Street between State Streets (now Highways 41/43) andKeefe Avenue

The first post office in Kaukauna was established in 1841, and it remains the only post office in the town today. The community's name comes from an event that occurred during its early years. A man named Kaukauna set up a trading post on the Koshkonok River, which soon became known as Kaukauna Falls. The man's descendants continue to live here and help run the community today. The early residents of Kaukauna were farmers who grew corn, potatoes, apples, etc., but they also traded goods with other communities around their area. In 1870, a group of Norwegian immigrants arrived in Kaukauna and began expanding the local agricultural production. Over time, other groups of immigrants arrived, including Germans (1893), Irish (1905), Poles (1914), Slovenes (1945), Japanese (1959), and Koreans (1965). All these newcomers helped to make Kaukuana a thriving community full of people from many different cultures. Kaukuana is home to several important historical landmarks including: the Hauptmann House Museum which is dedicated to honoring local pioneer Edward Hauptmann; Nauheim Cemetery which contains tombstones from various periods throughout history; Koshkanok Park which features picnicking facilities and hiking trails; and Dutchman's School which provides educational opportunities for children from all over Kaufman County. Additionally, Kaufman County Historical Society offers events throughout the year that explore aspects of our county's history.
