Kaukauna is a town in Polk County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,035 at the 2010 census. Kaukauna is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Kaukauna were French fur traders and missionaries who traveled through the area in 1674 and 1675. They named the area "Kauxawa" (Wisconespeak meaning "little wood"). In 1836, a group of Swedish immigrants settled here and named the community after their home country, Sweden. In 1854, three families from Illinois purchased land near present-day Kaukauna and built a log cabin called Folsom House. By 1865, four more families had come to live there and name the settlement after General James Kappes of the Union army during the American Civil War: Kappstown (now Waukesha), Kappenheim (now Racine), Kapperville (now West Allis), and Kappsburg (now Hudson). In 1870, settlers from Canada arrived with their stock of cattle and began farming land around present-day Kaukauna. In 1892, when Kaukauna Junior High School was founded by local citizens on Depot Road across from town square, students attended classes in temporary classrooms while they built their own school building on North Main Street. That same year also saw construction of a new post office which served as both schoolhouse and courthouse until it burned down in 1903. On November 8th, 1907 an earthquake struck northwest Wisconsin killing sixteen people including six members of the local village board; five days later Kaukuana's first grocery store opened for business with produce by Mrs. Annie Hechtman along with two other businesses located on Second Avenue NE corner Seventh Street NW serve as additional retailers until 1961 when that block was destroyed by fire set by high winds caused by Hurricane Agnes as part of preparations for that year's World Expo held at Madison WI).
