Kaukauna is a small town in the Driftless Lakes region of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Kaukauna is part of the Racine-Kaukauna micropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Kaukauna were French fur traders and Jesuit missionaries who traveled through the area between 1766 and 1770. In 1821, an act of Congress authorized the construction of a road from Bloomington, Illinois to Green Bay, Wisconsin. The first wagon train arrived in Kaukauna on July 5, 1825, led by George Washington Carver. The first post office was established in KAUKANUA on October 12, 1827. It was renamed KAUKENA on November 3 that year after General James Wilkinson commanded First Corps during the Battle of Lake Erie against British forces under Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Jackson (later Ulysses S. Grant). The original building still stands today as a museum within the community limits; it is located at 309 Main Street. Over time, some businesses and residences relocated to other parts of Kaukauna or were disbanded or closed altogether due to changes in technology or industry development outside of Kaukauna’s traditional areas such as agriculture or fishing/processing services provided by local companies such as Wabash Paper Company and American Can Co., both headquartered nearby in Wabash Heights annexed into Kaukena after 1907 according to Census data for that period accessed through Wisconsin Historical Society archives online repository . In recent decades many residents have moved away from their rural roots and are more likely resident commuters who rely primarily upon vehicle transportation for access to jobs outside their home towns while also using public transportation options available within Kaukauneeans confines like buses operated by GO Transit which originate and terminate at various locations throughout town center near Seventh Street intersection with I-94 exit
Kaukauna was founded by Paddy and Anna Kaukauna in 1854. In 1855, the first post office was established in Kaukauna. By 1860, Kaukauna had a school and a population of about 30 people. The first store in Kaukauna opened in 1860. In 1865, the town became a city with a population of about 100 people. By 1870, Kaukauna had two hotels and an opera house. The city granted independence to Kaukauna on November 4, 1871. On December 12, 1893, the last stagecoach route from Milwaukee to Kaukauna was operating; however, it continued to serve as a source of transportation for residents until 1925.
