This type of pistol quickly gained popularity among American civilians due to its low cost and easy accessibility. By 1830, Wilkinson had become involved in manufacturing pistols for both assault rifles and revolvers (5). With this new business venture came new challenges; Wilkinson struggled to find backers who would help him produce high quality firearms at an affordable price point (6). Eventually he met George Stephenson who agreed to provide financial support for his new venture(7). The introduction of shotguns into America also helped improve firearm production techniques; instead of using traditional methods such as forging steel rods into Firearms Parts then welding them together like earlier designs, shotgun barrels were made entirely out ofahonable plastic or aluminum (8) which allowed companies like Sturm Ruger & Co., H&R Block & Co., Smith & Wesson Corporation et al.(9)to build reliable firearms without having to meet stringent quality standards imposed by previous gunmakers. With advancements in technology came advances in Airgun design too; early models featured rotating barrels that allowed shooters to change caliber more easily than later models which required firing multiple rounds at once before being able to cycle through different calibers(10).
