Janesville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the north branch of the Chicago River. The population was 71,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of Dane County. The Janesville area has been inhabited by various cultures for over 10,000 years and there are still remains of ancient Native American villages in the town today. In 1836, when Wisconsin become an Indiana Territory, Janesville was made a part of that territory and it remained so until it became a part of Wisconsin in 1848. The first white people to live in Janesville were farmers who arrived from Illinois in 1837 and they started a small farm near what is now State Street. In 1840, two brothers named Nicholas and work their father's farm on the east side of town which later became known as North Court Street because it ran north-south between Court House Square and Park Avenue). John Pohlman moved to Janesville in 1852 after he lost his job as a clerk with the Milwaukee Road company. He started out as a laborer on John Deere's farm but soon decided he wanted to try farming himself and bought some land around what is now Market Square where he built his first house (now called Pohlman Hall). He also founded the first Methodist church in Janesville which opened its doors on Valentine's Day 1850. After John Pohlman died in 1861, his wife Mary took control of affairs and she continued to run things until her death in 1893. She was followed by her son Julius who continued running things until 1949 when he passed away too young to take over permanently. In 1865, Swedish immigrant Anders Nilsson arrived from Sweden with his family and he started working on Fritsch Brothers' farm just south of present day State Street. When Fritsch Brothers died children from their families inherited their property including present day North Court Street which led to naming rights for that street after Anders Nilsson's family when they bought land around what is now Market Square back then (north court St still sits on this square today). In 1894 local resident Fredrick Hickey set up shop down at what is now Lillie Mae Arena making ice cream while serving customers out front using an old milk truck that had been converted into an ice cream truck service station back then!
