Janesville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 25,462 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Janesville County and part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Janesville were two men, Adam Riess and his brother-in-law David Barron, who arrived on a boat from New York City on November 3, 1837. They erected a cabin near present day Appleton and started a small farm which they named "Plymouth." In 1840, they married Anna May Soderholm and moved to what is now Janesville. By 1845, they had five children: John (1841-1904), Henry (1843-1912), Laura (1846-1945), Rebecca (1849-1925) and Peter (1851-1920). The family soon outgrew their small farm and purchased land near present day Wauwatosa for $10 per acre ($ per ). They began building barracks for the local militia which served as their home until 1859 when an armory was built northwest of town on donated land known as Fort Snelling Arsenal Complex (). In 1861, John Soderholm was elected Sheriff of Racine County; he served for one term before being succeeded by his son Reuben Soderholm () in 1865. In 1875, Racine County became Wisconoset Township; it would later become part of Janesville Township in 1904 When Racine County disbanded in 1907 it remained part of Janesville Township until its dissolution in 1960 when it merged with Milwaukee County to form Milwaukee Metropolitan Area (). The first post office opened at Plymouth on November 3rd, 1837 (). In 1840 when John Soderholm moved to Janesville he also bought 150 acres west of town along Lake Michigan shoreline for $15/acre ($ per ). This property would be known as Wauwatosa Lakeside Center () where he began building homes starting in 1850s while still living at Plymouth style log cabins (). He also developed an agricultural soil mix that produced corn, wheat flourishes potatoes (), onions (), strawberries (), honeydews ())

A total of 154 Swedes settled here between 1837 and 1840 including Martin's brother Lars Kullberg and their father Sven Kullberg (baptized November 20, 1792 - died October 26, 1865). In 1841 Martin married Patsy Ottilia Carlson (died 1865) from Sweden who had also come over during that time period; they raised six children together before she died at age 38 while giving birth to their seventh child which Martin did not have time for due to his work contract with the railroad company. In 1903 the Village of Janesville merged with the Township of Pewaukee to form one large municipality known as Milwaukee–Waukesha–Elyria (). At this time there were nearly 50 different places called "Janesville," most likely because people from nearby towns would go into town for groceries or other errands while residents from other towns took care of essential services such as policing and firefighting within their respective municipalities. By 1960 all but one of these municipalities had been absorbed into Milwaukee-Waukesha-Elyria which now has an estimated population exceeding 6 million residents across its five counties including Racine, Brown Deer, Kenosha, Wausoka,and Tomahawk Lakes areas making it one of North America's largest metropolitan areas!
