Janesville, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 55,541 at the 2010 census, making it the third-most populous city in Milwaukee County and one of its five cities. It lies on the south bank of the Kinnickinnic River and is bordered to the east by Milwaukee and to the west by Rock Island County. The first optical instruments were fashioned from lamellar glass and plastic materials during World War I as part of military technology research. Janesville became home to one of America's first optical factories in 1919 when United States Optical Co., Inc., was founded there by Gustavus Swenakowsky, an inventor who had developed a new type of lens for use with optics cameras. In 1932 Janesville became home to America's first practical three-dimensional television system when WLW began broadcasting live images on transmission towers across town from Municipal Stadiums on North Main Street. In 1916–17 local residents successfully lobbied for passage of a resolution recognizing World War I veteran George Custer's military achievement during Battle of Little Bighorn as an event deserving national commemoration. The city subsequently built City Hall on North First Street which remains today one of the few structures remaining from this time period in downtown Janesville! In 1984 local residents succeeded in getting approval to build Governors Park – then known as Forest Park – on former farmland near Interstate 94 between South 22nd Street and South 24th Street east of downtownJanesville!
