Janesville, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 19,651 at the 2010 census, making it the largest municipality in Milwaukee County. The Battle of Fort Donelson occurred on November 12, 1862 nearpresent-day downtown Janesville while Union forces were besieging Confederate General Braxton Bragg's fortifications at Donelson Bridge over the Vermilion River; both Confederate commanders lost their lives during that battle including General James Fenton Polk who later became Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President and namesake for much of Illinois and Nebraska Territory. After the surrender of General Robert Eager at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, all northern states except Virginia participated in Reconstruction which ended with military occupation by Ulysses S. Grant's administration following the Emancipation Proclamation on January 6, 1865; this event is generally considered to be marking the end of slavery in America. In 1868 local resident John Cushman donated land to build an industrial park east of present day downtown Janesville called Cushman Park which eventually became one of Midwest Manufacturing Corporation’s largest plants manufacturing concrete, metal products and other goods until it closed down in 1984 due to economic decline within regional industries In 1898 local resident Willard Leland founded Luther College which eventually became University Of Wisconsin–Madison In 1927 local resident Harry Fry established Wernher Foods Incorporated which produced frozen food items such as hamburgers, pizza doughnuts and macaroni & cheese until it merged into PepsiCo Incorporated prior to its closure in 2006 On December 15th 1979 UW–Milwaukee students protesting against tuition increases occupied Wernher Foods Incorporated building resulting in several injuries amongst bystanders before police arrived; these demonstrations are sometimes referred to as "the Milwaukee Minimum Wage Riot". On September 5th 1990 UW–Milwaukee students occupying Wernher Foods Incorporation again resulted in injuries involving pepper spray when police used it against protesters who had barricaded themselves inside; this event is also sometimes referred to as "the UW–Milwaukee peaceful protests". Finally on May 2nd 1993 UW–Madison students occupying Wernher Foods Incorporation resulted in teacher lockout or job lockouts afterunsatisfied labor demands leading to public outcry culminating with governor Tommy Thompson signing a bill creating collective bargaining rights for teachers across Wisconsin schools although this measure did not go into effect until 1996 . All three occupations are still commemorated each year by annual rallies organized by various student groups throughout campus

By the early 1900s, Janesville had become an important city in Wisconsin because of its industry and commerce.
