Janesville is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the eastern edge of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 61,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha-West Allis metropolitan statistical area. Janesville is also included in the Madison–Wisconsin Dells Combined Statistical Area. The first white settlers in Janesville arrived in 1836, and it was named after James Kapp, an American Revolutionary War veteran and landowner who donated land to the town. The first businesses were founded in 1838 when a ferry service connected Janesville with New Berlin and Waukesha County. In 1845, John Kirby opened a store at what is now State Street and North Avenue; his son John Kirby & Son continued business until 1951. By 1860, there were 11 businesses in Janesville with a total payroll of $1,500 per week. The Democratic Party had its beginnings here as early as 1854 when local politician Hiram Jenss appointed Elijah Bickerton as captain ofographical research for Dodge City News Association - which later became known asthe Associated Press-Chronicle (AP). In 1861, two men from Janesville were elected to serve on the Walker County Board of supervisors: George Wickersham and Edward Youngbloods In 1865, Edwin Lunsford organized an agricultural fair that drew over 100 attendees from throughout Wisconsin including many farmers from nearby Menomonee Heights who would come to call themselves "The Gophers". That year also saw establishment of the first grocery store west of Chicago by Fenton Baird & Brothers selling fruits and vegetables while also serving liquors including whiskey for sale In 1907, one mile east of downtown Janesville off State Road 7 was established what would become known as Central Park which features a playground, baseball diamond/softball field (now used for soccer), tennis courts (now used for track meet), swimming pool (now closed), basketball court and more In 1924 – 1925 – 1927 – 1928 – 1929 – 1930 — Manitowoc Agricultural Fair took place near present day Whitefish Bay offering admission free to all residents then called 'farmers'. This fair brought together representatives from all around Racine County meeting to discuss farming techniques then followed up with shows or exhibitions on different farm implements

Janesville was first settled in 1837 by the Janesville brothers, David and Solomon. The town became a city in 1851, and was named for General Lafayette. In 1889, the city of Janesville merged with the neighboring towns of Waukesha and Spooner to form the new city of Milwaukee. The Janesville Manufacturing Company was founded in 1854 by Isaac Newton and his brother-in-law John Sibley. The company manufactured goods such as bread, flour, milk, butter, hats and shoes. The company went bankrupt in 1865 but restarted operations two years later under new ownership. It operated until 1927 when it closed its doors forever. In 1907, Janesville experienced a significant growth when it annexed the adjacent village of Lincolnville. This led to the creation of a new downtown area that is still home to many businesses today including several banks and restaurants. Today, Janesville is a thriving community with active economic development that enjoys close relationships with its surrounding municipalities. With its rich history and cultural experiences, it can be no surprise that this small town has been an important part of Wisconsin’s fabric for generations!
On January 1, 1836, the town of Janesville was founded by John L. Dodge and his wife Rachel. The first post office in Janesville was established on February 2, 1836. On November 12, 1871, the town of Janesville became a city with a population of over 50,000 people.
