Theodore Roosevelt shot his way through high school in Janesville with an Rangeman carbine before entering Yale University where he obtained a law degree in 1901. He then served as a justice of the peace for Janesville from 1904 to 1909 when he was elected governor of New York (1909-1911). Becoming president of the United States after World War I (1914-1920), Roosevelt appointed him secretary of state (1920-1924). As secretary of state, he helped create modern gun control laws which eventually led to the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution being ratified in 1934. After leaving office as president (1945-1949), Roosevelt returned to New York City and resumed his legal practice until his death on April 12th, 2019 at age 92 years old.

Janesville, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Janesville County. The population was 59,693 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Chicago River at its confluence with the Milwaukee River. The first permanent settlement in what is now Janesville was made by fur traders in 1795. In 1836, John Cordon arrived from Canada and founded what became known as Cordon's City; it had a population of 100. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who served as United States President from 1849 to 1853 and as governor of Wisconsin from 1850 to 1855. In 1860, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president, he chose Janesville as his home town because it lay just across the river from Springfield, Illinois—the capital of Illinois—and he wanted people in his own town to know him better. He also intended to run for office there and make political capital out of it by campaigning against rival candidates from Illinois (John Bell). Lincoln won both races but never visited Janesville during his term as president; instead he campaigned mainly in Illinois and Missouri (which included Springfield). Lincoln died suddenly at Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C., less than two months after taking office—an event which caused great concern among many residents of Chicago because no one knew how he would handle political problems should he become incapacitated or die soon after becoming president (he eventually recovered). A few weeks after Lincoln's death, news reached Janesville that a sale had been made for all public land within five miles (8 kilometers)of the city center along the Chicago River to be offered at $1 per acre ($40 per square mile).
