Janesville is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, and the seat of Janesville County. The population was 83,636 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in Wisconsin and the fourth-largest in Dane County after Milwaukee, Waukesha, and Racine counties. The town of Janesville was platted on December 12, 1838 by George Hennepin as part of a land grant to Solomon Pettey from Denmark for his support of American independence during the Northwest Rebellion against British rule. The town name honors General David Wells who fought in that rebellion under Major General Anthony Wayne. The first post office in Janesville was established on January 6, 1840. It was renamed North Prairie on July 1, 1851 after President James K. Polk gave approval for its creation as an enlarged town center with new buildings north of State Street between Washington Avenue and Erie Boulevard. The first mayor was John Poulson while Adam Clayton Powell Jr., later United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development served as mayor from 1945 to 1951; he also chaired the influential planning committee that recommended the construction of Interstate 94 through Janesville Heights into downtown Janesville Held every year since then, it has been called "Powell's Day". As one result, many people within or nearby Janesville refer to themselves simply as "Janetlers." In 1907–1908, when North Prairie had an estimated population estimate (based on surveys) over 100,000 but only had a total area of about , it merged with neighboring towns South Prairie (now Auburn) and West Prairie to form what is now known as Madisonville Township (incorporated date unknown). This merger caused some confusion because all three towns were named after US Presidents: George Washington (), James K Polk (), Franklin D Roosevelt (). However according to one source there may have been no such merger because North Prairie never applied for incorporation while South Prairie did which would make it easier politically for Roosevelt to receive his name recognition due him residing in both cities at once rather than having two separate namesakes which would have requiredapproval from two different bodies politic

Janesville, Wisconsin was founded in 1845 by John F. Sloss and his wife, Eliza Jane. Janesville is a city located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2010 census, the population of Janesville was 97,871. January 1st is the date that Janesville became a city and it has been on an increase every year since then with over 100K growth! The original town site was only five acres and it took many years to build up to what we have today! The first post office at Janesville was established on February 4th, 1846. The first teacher in town was Mrs. Cramer and she taught school until 1850 when she moved to Racine because there were more opportunities for teaching here! The first church in Janesville was built in 1851 by Revs. Haggerty and Morse! Christ Episcopal Church served as the parish seat until 1861 when they moved to Waukesha because of financial problems with their previous building! However, they continued serving as a church until 1865 when they bought an old mill from George Stephenson which served as their new parish home for many years! In 1892 the City Council decided that it would be more efficient if all business transactions were done through the village plat form instead of having individual businesses deal with different officials each time something needed to be done (ie streets were platted). This system still exists today and can be seen in everything from zoning changes to building permits! The most famous resident of Janesville during its early days was Isaac Brockman who ran a grocery store on Main Street from about 1830-1834 before moving into real estate development around 1840-1847!! He also helped found the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1849!!! After leaving UW–Madison he started another grocery store called “Brockman’s” near where I now work…it still stands today!) After Isaac Brockman left town (he died young), things grew much slower forJanesville residents during this time period 😉 However, things picked up after World War II whenjanuary 2nd came about due to prohibition 🙂 In 1945 local manufacturer Harry Janssen donated land next door to his factory so that everyone could get a job at Janssen Automotive Products Incorporated!!! That company became one of Janesville’s biggest employers throughout the 50’s and 60’s!! Eventually Harry Janssen donated his entire production facility including all his machines onto campus at UW–Milwaukee which eventually led to him becoming one of our most well-known university donors ever!!!! 🙂 In recent years there has been an increase in housing values withinJanesville due mostly to rising prices for farmland surrounding townspeople 😀 But even though housing prices are increasing slowly but surely, there are always some people who manage to find ways keep their homes affordable especially given how valuable farmland can be🙂
