In 1839, Ahnricht Weiser founded a fur trading post southeast of present-day Janesville on what is now known as Weiser Road. A year later, he erected a structure known today as the Weiser Hotel which served as his headquarters for many years until it burned down in 1879; unfortunately, it was completely destroyed by fire which also damaged much else within town including Ahnricht's archives and other important historical artifacts. In 1842, Dutchman Cornelius Vanderlip established an agricultural colony (later named Hennepin County) north of present day Milwaukee along the Fox River where he farmed corn, beans, potatoes and other crops until his death in 1862. After his death, his son John took over farming operations and renamed Hennepin County after himself – this eventually led to its incorporation into Milwaukee County in 1896). North of today's Decatur Street there once stood one or more large frame houses used by traders during early settlement days – these are currently gone but still visible from some distance thanks to their location atop an overlook overlooking downtown Janesville scene from just east of Interstate 94 near University Avenue/Milwaukee Drive/Old National Highway 41 exit road (Upper level: I94 East | Lower level: I94 West | Overlook: Old National Highway 4

One of the earliest settlements in Janesville was started by David Lewis in 1795. In 1837, a post office was established and named after General John C. Fremont, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The town became a village in 1859, and then a city in 1911.
