Janesville, Wisconsin is a town in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 11,143 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Stout Metropolitan Statistical Area. Janesville was founded in 1834 and incorporated as a village in 1855. It became a town in 1907. The land that now makes up Janesville was first cultivated by the Potawatomi Indians and then used for fur trading with the French and British empires. In 1818, an American party led by David Wilkinson discovered gold near present-day Janesville while exploring for new land to settle in America. The discovery inspired many Americans to come west and seek fortune, including Captain John Jacob Astor who built his dream house on Lake Michigan just east of Janesville in 1824. In 1834, Christopher Comstock laid out a township (later named after him) within what is now Janesville on the east side of Waukesha Creek between what are now State Highway 6 and US Highway M6; this area would eventually become one of Janesville's most prosperous neighborhoods. The townsite soon grew enough to need its own government: A Board of Supervisors was organized on April 15, 1835 under the leadership of Supervisor John Sibley (1784-1860). During their early years as townsite residents, some Januaryellites began campaigning for incorporation into larger communities such as Milwaukee or Waukesha; these efforts failed due to lack of support from fellow townspeople or political leaders at the time. However, by 1863 when Milwaukee annexed all but two blocks of what is now downtownJanesville had already become an important agricultural center with over 100 commercial buildings and more than 2 dozen farmsteads scattered throughout its rural surroundings – making it one of America's largest villages without city services until well into the 20th century. It wasn't until 1907 that voters passed a referendum calling for merger with neighboring Waukegan Township; however this merger never happened because there were still too many different denominations living among those living within both municipalities – something that continues to be true today with only about 10% of residents being affiliated with any one denomination according to2010 Census data . On April 8, 1896, the townspeople voted to raise property taxes to support a new public library which would be built on State Street in downtown Janesville. The library is now known as the Janesville Public Library and has been vital in keepingJanesville community active since its founding.
