It is the second-largest city in Dane County and the largest city within Milwaukee County. In 1839, settlers from Illinois founded Janesville with thirteen families. The first post office opened in 1841. The town was named for Lieutenant Colonel John C. Janes of the 4th U.S. Infantry Regiment who fought in the Mexican War and also served as Mayor of Janesville from 1851 to 1861 and again from 1865 to 1867; he is buried there under Monument No. 1 on Main Street between Welton Road and State Street. The University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW) campus has been located in Janesville since 1895 when it was part of the then-dominant UW System which included UW Milwaukee, UW eachtowns (River Falls, Appleton, Tomahawk), UW Green Bay and UW Madison–Milwaukee campuses across eight counties including Dane and Winnebago Counties as well as Cook County north of Chicago Heights; that system later became known as the "Wisconsin Experiment". In 1902 UW School of Medicine moved into its present building on South Kilburn Avenue adjacent to Lake Michigan east of downtown; this building still stands today as one of only a few buildings on campus where all three schools share common facilities such as classrooms, research laboratories/centers/gymnasiums/spaces for professional sports teams (e.g., basketball team coached by Bo Ryan), student services (academic advising offices/aides deans offices), student lounges/bars/dining commons etc.. In 1966 what had been called the Business Tower were erected – now known as Sears Tower – on land leased from American Telephone & Telegraph Company subsidiary TCI America Incorporated for use by both universities side by side with respective parking garages beneath them providing approximately 3 million square feet (280 hectares)² Mall space total stretching back two blocks from State Street filled with academic buildings housing some 65 different undergraduate programs therein comprising twelve faculties plus several dozen graduate programs covering a variety of medical specialties along with large numbers OfSupport staff Halls used by many diverse organizations ranging From Corporate Headquarters To Local Governments And First responders
