Janesville, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Janesville County. The population was 38,693 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1855 by John C. Olmsted and others as a post office on land donated by Nicholas Wisniewski. It became a city in 1872 and annexed the neighboring town of West Allis in 1908. The first settlers to Janesville were Germans who arrived from eastern Prussia in 1818 and built a log cabin on the east side of the Des Moines River near present-day Janesville Junction. They named their new settlement " Jensvilles" after Prince Johann Wilhelm von Schleswig-Holstein, who had sent them directions for finding safe passage through America if they encountered difficulties along their way. A year later, Scottish immigrants also arrived, naming their new community " Perth." In 1825, all three settlements combined to form what is now Janesville Township; however, it was not until 1857 that an act of Congress created Polk County from portions of Janesville Township and other nearby counties. In 1855, John C. Olmsted purchased additional land north of present-day downtown Janesville from Nicholas Wisniewski for $1 per acre (the cost at that time being about $10 per acre). Olmsted intended to create a new village he called New Town or Chicago but abandoned his idea due to lack of support from local officials; instead he developed what would become downtownJanesville with slave labor provided by his brother James Kappeler and other entrepreneurs involved in early transportation infrastructure development in central Wisconsin . Upon its incorporation as a city on October 15, 1912 under Mayor George Schieffer (D), DowntownJanesville quickly emerged as one of Wisconsin's leading commercial and industrial centers with its busy streetscapes lined with elegant residences dating back to when it was just an agricultural outpost accessed by wagon roads linking western Iowa with central Illinois

Janesville is a city in Janesville County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Metropolitan Area. The name "Janesville" comes from Indian Miskaalen meaning "place where everything grows". The first European to visit Janesville was Captain James Clark in 1774. He named it for John Neely Draper, an Englishman who had surveyed and charted the area during the mid-19th century. A post office called Janesville was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1851, a group of farmers filed a petition with the Wisconsin State Legislature to incorporate as a city. The first mayor of Janesville was Lorenzo Sawyer and the first City Council was formed on November 3, 1851. At that time, there were no streets or sidewalks; residents simply walked or took streetcar rides to their homes. On October 10, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his inaugural address in which he spoke about how our country would be improved by adding cities like Janesville to its growing list of metropolitan areas. After Lincoln's inauguration, work began on improving transportation within Janesville and neighboring towns so that people could easily access jobs in Milwaukee and other nearby cities. In 1865, Mayor John Fenton proposed building what is now known as Downtown Janesville – a plan that would have included moving the library from WestAllis Avenue to Main Street (now First Avenue). However, due to financial constraints at the time - including a $5 million deficit caused by high taxes - this proposal never came to fruition.
The first settler in Janesville was John Fetterman. He arrived in 1836 and built a log cabin on the east side of the current town square. The town was named after him.
