Janesville, Wisconsin is a town of about sixty thousand people located in the Nicolet County seat of Janesville. The population was seventy-six thousand at the 2010 census. Ammunition manufacturers have been based in Janesville since 1881. The first ammunition production in Janesville took place at the Central Gun Works, which was founded by George Leng and his brothers John and Amos Leng. After World War I, production moved to the Armory Company until it closed in 1955. Production recommenced at the Armory Company after that company's closure until 1984 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms, Inc. to form Winchester Brands, Incorporated. That company produced ammunition until 1995 when it merged with Remington Arms Corporation to form Remington Research & Development Corporation. In 2000, REMI became part of Brownells plc., a British munitions manufacturer that has since been sold to BAE Systems Plc.. The Janesville Arsenal was built in 1881 as part of a system of armories that were developed throughout Wisconsin during the late 1800s and early 1900s as a way to provide defense against Sioux Indians and other Native Americans who threatened agricultural communities statewide. The arsenal was used primarily for manufacturing artillery rounds but also manufactured smoke grenades and pistols including revolvers and shotguns. It served as an important facility for both local industry and national arms manufacturers before being mothballed in 1942 due to World War II military needs elsewhere in the country. In 1951, it was reactivated as a center for research into new ammunition technologies following the Korean War effort and remained operational until 1977 when it closed again due largely to budget cuts within government agencies across America). In 1984, Winchester Brands purchased adjacent property on West State Street from Consolidated American Corp., which had been operating there since 1907 as Consolidated Ammo Manufacturing Co., making it one of the oldest continuous ammo manufacturing facilities in operation outside of North America!. From 1985 through 1995, REMI operated outbuildings on West State Street adjacent to the Arsenal while their main building was constructed on South State Street within Decatur Township (which includes Janesville). During those years they produced more than two million rounds of ammunition per year just from their operations inside Decatur Township! In 2000 Brownells plc., an English munitions manufacturer that has since been sold to BAE Systems Plc., bought Remington Research & Development Corporation from Remington Arms Corporation for $2 billion USD! At this point we can say that Remi has now become one of BAE Systems' wholly owned subsidiaries! Janesville, Wisconsin is an agricultural town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 43,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Eau Claire metropolitan area and is located about northwest of Milwaukee on the eastern side of the Wisconsin River. The Town of Janesville was organized in 1836 from parts of Waupun and West Allis. The name means "bridge over the river." The Janesville Manufacturing Company was founded in 1867 by John Fenton, a African Americansmith and carpenter who had come to America from Africa as a slave. He started out making farm tools and later became a manufacturer of machinery for agriculture and other businesses. In 1904, he sold his company to Consolidated Edison Corporation. In 1967, Janesville voters adopted a resolution calling for incorporation into the City ofMilwaukee; this proposal failed but it served as an inspiration for later efforts to annex Janesville onto Milwaukee proper. In 1938, when Milwaukee annexed much of west suburban Milwaukee—including most of what is now Janesville—the first steps were made to incorporate Janesville into that city; they were successful and incorporation took place on July 1, 1939. Ammunition became increasingly important as battlefields became more difficult to defend against large numbers of enemy soldiers. Ammunition also played a role in naval warfare during the war by providing shells that could explode on impact or canister shots that can sink boats. Since the end of World War II, ammunition continues to play a significant role in society across all forms of activity including war, peacekeeping, and law enforcement. Janesville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the north bank of the Kettle River. The population was 44,452 at the 2010 census. Janesville is one of six towns in Green Bay County, which forms the core of the city of Green Bay. The first permanent settler in what is now Janesville was David Blankenhorn in 1837. He and his family were farmers and built a log cabin near present-day State Street and US Highway 10. In 1840, he married Mary Ziegler and they started a small grocery store next door to their home on North Main Street. In 1845, John Smith moved from Minnesota to buy land east of Janesville along with his brother Amos Smith and four others: Elijah Bicknell (1824-1907), Hiram Bussey (1827-1900), Abram Emmons (1829-1902) and Solomon Northrup (1831-1920). They named their new community "New Home" after Smith's old home in Minneapolis. The first post office was established here on September 11, 1846 by Samuel Morse with James Hutton as clerk; it continued until it closed on May 15, 1889 due to changes in mail delivery system. In 1870, Jensigen Brothers & Company opened a flour mill west of town on Menominee Creek; this mill would eventually produce more than 100 million pounds of flour for local use over its 60 years operation! In 1893, two brothers by the name of Ditmars opened a meatpacking company here that would grow into one of America's leading sources for pork products! By 1900, Janesville had become an important agricultural center with more than 200 businesses employing over 1,000 people! After World War II ended in 1945 – when Wisconsin reverted back to its prewar boundaries – Janesville experienced rapid growth as many factory jobs migrated out to newly created suburbs such as Milwaukee or Chicago while downtown slowly shrunk back into its historic self until it reached its current size today thanks largely to new development around Interstate 94/Wisconsin Avenue including several large shopping malls! Today Janesville is known for its arts scene - founded by students at UW–Milwaukee who used local talent show off their work at art shows throughout town - as well as its vibrant nightlife culture which includes venues like The Ravello Ballroom and The Living Room nightclubs found throughout downtown
