A sawmill was built on this new land by Mifflin in 1837 and soon local traders began shipping lumber to Superior and Chicago via cross country transportation routes. In 1848, a post office was established at Chippewa Point where it remains today. During its early years as a small settlement, Janesville functioned primarily as an agricultural community with corn farming being its primary occupation Some buildings still extant from these days include the pioneer courthouse which stood until 1979 when it burned down; also remaining are several residences dating back to this time including Mrs. Lefebvre’s house which still stands today; Mr & Mrs Dodge’s house which served as Headquarters for government services during World War II; Drury’s grocery store which operated until 1971; four churches also remained standing through various incarnations over that time period: First Methodist church (1853), Evangelical Lutheran church (1875), United Synagogue (1909), Baptist church (1963). Eventually other rural businesses followed suit such as a farm tractor dealership operated by Julius Kappeler until it closed down in 1975 due to high taxes levied against it by then Juniata County government; however some evidence suggests that a similar dealership may have reopened under different ownership shortly afterward In 1886, three brothers named George Hull bought 2/5ths interest in J&J McCormick Distilling Co., later renamed George Hulman Brewing Co., operating out of what is now known as The Ravello Company building located at 811 S Main St . At this time Hulman also became an owner/operator of The Evening Journal print shop located at 710 E Adams St . Today there are numerous historic sites within or adjacent to Janesville including but not limited to: brick kiln located just north of I-94 exit 54A off I-74 between exits 39A & 40A; old post office building located between Union Pacific Railroad tracks & University Avenue; Pioneer Cemetery (); former brewery buildings including original founder's homebuilt around 1860.; old mill complex consisting of gristmill(1886), flour mill(1892), maltings(1901), smokehouse(1907), blacksmith shop(1908) & water tower(& power plant 1906 ; see below ). On January 1st 1889 – 25 years after incorporation – januaryville incorporated as an unincorporated village under Act No 624 entitled "An act for erecting convenient public square" . On December 10th 1903 when School District #1 merged into School District #2 effective January 1st 1904 , all school district properties were annexed into newly formed School District #3 constituting approximately 82% Prairie View A&M University campus area including all property associated with individual schoolsjanuaryville enjoyed continued success thruout many decades culminating with vibrant retail growth spurring even more development both Residential & Commercial totaling over 4 Square Miles since 2005
