Hudson, Wisconsin is a town located in the central part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,482 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Green Bay County and it forms the core of the greater Hudson-Oneida Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of July 1, 2019, Hudson had a population of 11,895 people[2] making it the fastest growing incorporated municipality in Wisconsin over that period. The first settler in what is now Hudson was Nicholas Knechtel who built a log cabin on high ground east of today's downtown on October 16th 1836. He named his settlement after John Smiths map he had seen while surveying land for Pierre LeMoyne's new fur trading post on Lake Michigan near modern day Chicago. The first school in present day Hudson was organized by Reverend Moses Howells on November 5th 1838 with 12 students enrolled from five families living along Washington Street and Middle Road northwest of downtown[3]. In 1841, James Crain opened a stage stop called Cedar Grove which became one of Hudsons earliest businesses[4]. By 1840, average daily incomes for men working outside agriculture were $14; women $7; children 0-5 years old $0; and those age 6 to 17 years $3 per day[5]. In 1855-1856 developer Augustus Beecher started building what would become known as Beechers Corners where he laid out large lots for sale to farmers and businessmen east of present day State Street between Cedar and Ottawa Streets [6]. In 1865 residents voted to change their name to Hudson after General Samuel Jomphe Fuller who died in office suddenly days before they met to choose an alternate name[7][8][9][10]. When General Fuller's body was exhumed two years later only 7 percent of his personal effects were found so his legacy remains largely unknown but local historians believe he may have been buried at nearby Mayflower Cemetery because there is evidence his family moved there after his death[11][12]). A small number (less than 10%) artifacts from General Fuller's life have been found since 1800 including items such as letters, books & papers from government service including assignments he received while stationed in Illinois during Springfield’s Civil War that survive still unopened today[13], possibly traceable back to him being buried hereabouts
