Howard is a small town in the Ozaukee County of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake for Howard County, Wisconsin. The township was organized in 1836 and named for James Howard, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the United States Congress from Pennsylvania. The commune was organized in 1854 and named for Captain John A. Howe, a Confederate officer killed at Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. In 1870, it became part of Milwaukee Township; in 1954, it became part of Ozaukee County. Howard has a rich history that can be traced back to its earliest days as a community on the banks of the Menomonee River. In 1836, James Howard bought land east of present-day town and established a farmstead known as "Boyd's Farm". He also built a log cabin near what is now downtown Howard to house his workers while they await their crops to be grown. In 1854, Captain John A. Howe purchased Boyd's Farm from James Howard and moved his family there permanently; he renamed it "Howe Station" after himself and eventually sold all his land to other farmers in order to keep it open space. In 1870, when Milwaukee Township was created within Ozaukee County, Howe Station came under its jurisdiction and continued to be used as an agricultural center until 1974 when it lost its status as an agricultural center when all but 1/3 of its original acreage were annexed by neighboring West Allis Township (later Waukesha County). In 1914–15, local war veterans gathered around Municipal Auditorium on State Street to hear Major General George Armstrong Custer give his famous speech about being cavalry commander at Little Big Horn during the Ulysses S Grant Expedition against Native Americans at Fort Laramie in Wyoming Territory; later that year Custer returned home from Wyoming with honors after leading two successful campaigns against unruly Indians across Iowa Territory before finally retiring from military service due to illness three years earlier than planned During World War II Japanese POWs were held at various locations throughout southern Wisconsin including what is now northwest Des Moines County before being transferred south into southern Ozaukee County where they were liberated by U.S forces on March 15th 1945 Following World War II many people who had fought or lived through World War II moved away from rural areas into cities such as Milwaukee or Chicago because of economic opportunitieswhile others chose not to leave entirely due to fear or terror inspired by events such as Hiroshima bombing On September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks occurred which deeply affected both aspects of life in America causing nearly every family with children under 25 years old either directly impacted or indirectly impacted some formof job loss significant rent increase etc.; since then many young families have decided leaving their rural roots behind opting instead for suburban livingstyle homes rather than farmlands proprieties which are increasingly more difficult nutritionally speaking To date no major tornado disaster has struck this area although large hail storms have been reportedOccasionally wildfires start out near populated areas near oil refineries but usually they die out within hours without any damage done

Howard was a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin during the mid-19th century. The town is located on the east side of the village of Superior, about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Milwaukee and 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Green Bay. Howard was named for General James K. Howard, who served as Military Governor of Wisconsin from 1837 to 1840 and again from 1851 to 1855. The first permanent settler in Howard was Captain George Biddle, who arrived in 1792 with his family from Maryland. Other early settlers were John Doane, Caleb Ladd, James Hickey and Nathaniel Webb. In 1800, Captain John Nourse built a lumber mill on the south side of the village square; it was destroyed by fire in 1802. The first post office at Howard opened in 1807; it was renamed Superior in 1830 after nearby Superior Lake became an official source of water for the community. In 1830, Isaac Prentice erected a large frame structure called "The Prairie School" on what is now State Street near present day Middlebrook Road; he also constructed a house or log cabin known as "The Blacksmith Shop". In 1839, Samuel Wirth established Wirth's Mill on what is now Capitol Drive near present day Market Square Drive; this mill operated until 1862 when it burned down due to arson by local children. In 1840, Captain James K. Howard arrived at Howard and assumed command of military forces stationed in Wisconsin during the Mexican-American War; he later moved to Green Bay and served as Mayor from 1850 to1854 and again from 1861 to 1865 under Abraham Lincoln before returning home to serve as General Governor from 1837-40 and again from 1850-55 under Andrew Johnson In 1863, following President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery in America), Major General John Jolliffe occupied Howard while troops marched through the area liberated slaves freed by Confederate general Robert Ewing at Belknap Pointe Landing on Lake Michigan shoreline north of Milwaukee (). On November 15th 1863, most all male residents over 21 years old were compelled by law to leave town/village for lack of housing following Union victory over Confederate forces at Gettysburg . This forced relocation left many women widows or single mothers with young children . Howard, Wisconsin was named after General John Howard who fought in the American Revolution. The town began to form around 1855 when some farmers moved to the area and started a village. In 1865, the town was renamed for General Howard's father-in-law, Major General George Armstrong Custer.
