In 1896, local developer James Hickey purchased land east of present-day Howard for a shopping center which would include a movie theater and other commercial buildings. The town's name changed to honor its founder when it incorporated as a municipality in 1932; it remains an unincorporated community today. Howard, Wisconsin is a small town located in Racine County, Wisconsin. The population was 439 at the 2000 census and 528 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. Howard was founded in 1855 by John Howard and his wife, Sarah. The first post office was established in 1856. In 1870, the village of Howard merged with the town of Racine to form a new municipality. The population of Racine declined from its peak in 1920 to its lowest point in 1990; however, it has since regained some of its lost ground and now stands at 551 residents according to the 2010 census. John Fenton Howard was born on October 10th, 1812, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania as John FawcettHoward. He emigrated with his family to what is now Racine County, Wisconsin on February 11th, 1835. At age 25 years old John married Sarah Jane (Neely) Knowles on March 3rd, 1836 in Waukesha County,. They had two children: John Fenton(1837-1911), who became an assistant editor at the Milwaukee Journal under George Hearst and later served as publisher following Hearst's death and Eloise Jane (1840-) who became an advertising specialist for Jello Bites commercials before dying young from a brain tumor aged only 36 years old In 1850 John FentonHoward opened up his own grocery store which soon became known for their quality produce items such as apples and grapes that were not available from other stores nearby. One early customer from nearby Chilton recalled "There wasn't any other grocery store around here except Mr. Howard's place where you could buy everything fresh." In 1865 he moved into his current building which still stands today within walking distance of all of his original customers including today's local farmers market which helps keep prices low for consumers while also providing valuable shopping experience for locals John FentonHoward died on December 23rd 1902 after a long battle with cancer but left behind an incomparable legacy that has continued through today's business community including more than 170 employees who support him through their families . His widow Sarah Jane lived until she passed away on September 12th 1967 after 47 years living alone with her late husband John FentonHoward's portrait still hangs above her kitchen table
