In 1912, George Custer was killed while riding his horse into town to buy supplies from local farmers on Highway 20A near present-day downtown Hartford. His burial took place on Main Street in front of City Hall until 1966 when his remains were moved to Greenwood Cemetery outside town limits in order to be closer to family and friends.
