Hartford, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin that is the county seat for Douglas County. The population was 5,566 at the 2010 census. It lies along State Highway 9 between Green Bay and Racine, about 20 miles east of Milwaukee on the border of Menomonee and Racine counties. Hartford was founded in 1847 as a small village named Hartford on a location known today as Midland Park. In 1857, it became part of the newly created Douglas County when it was merged from Menomonee and Racine counties. The first post office in Hartford opened in 1858, and remained open until 1969. The original town site included only a few homes and a schoolhouse; but by 1870, Hartford had taken on a more substantial form with several blocks of buildings west of Main Street, including an Episcopal church (dedicated to St. John Ambrosius), an infirmary (now an ambulance station), and two stores/cafés/libraries (now Pequod’s Cafeteria and A&P Supermarkets). By 1890, Hartford had also erected three churches: one Protestant (St John's Episcopal) built on some land north of Main Street; one Baptist (Methodist) built over part of what is now River Road; and one Catholic (Redemptorist)Church constructed near what is now Elm Street (/veterans Memorial Hospital). In 1896-97, the city fathers began tearing down older buildings in downtown Hartford to make way for construction of new municipal hall/courthouse which would serve as the community's courthouse until 1961 when that structure was replaced by Douglas County Court House which still stands today across from Mercy Plaza Civic Center (renamed The Hartt Center following its purchase by Archdiocese Of Milwaukee in 2006). The city fathers also developed plans for expansion into outlying areas surrounding downtown such as North Avenue which eventually became Uniondale Boulevard; though this plan never came to fruition because no money could be found to build any roads or proper infrastructure necessary for such development beyond what already existed within Hartford limits at that time. Finally during World War II veteran housing developments were planned but never implemented due to concerns about potential air raid damage caused by heavy bomber loadings throughout town center area however some remains remain related to these projects such as vacant lots located just east of Central Ave./Hudson St., just south of Railroad Tracks & just north of Veterans Memorial Hospital

The first settlers to Hartford were white men who came from New England in 1792. They built a log cabin on what is now State Road 2 near present-day Watertown. In 1837, they organized as a township and named it after Connecticut’s Hartford Township which had been created two years earlier. The first post office was established in 1837 and operated until 1862; it was renamed Watertown in 1886 because of its proximity to Lake Michigan. A canal was built through Hartford Township in 1847 and became known as the Milwaukee Canal; its original terminus was at what is now Unionville Corners on US 41 near modern day Waukesha County *. In 1850, when Milwaukee County was created, portion ofHartford Township became Racine County*. After Racine County was dissolved by state law in 1901*, most of it became Milwaukee County* again* but *Hartford Township* remained within Green Bay County*. The last resident to leave Hartford proper died in 1925; all that remains today are glimpses of some early buildings from when it consisted only of a few houses on State Road 2 north-west of downtown watertown
