The Hartford Rifle and Pistolsmiths was a gunsmith shop in Hartford, Wisconsin that operated from 1852 to 1926. The shop was founded by John S. Morse and Nathan Fenton, both of whom were local businessmen. The shop specialized in rifles and pistols, serving the town of Hartford as well as the surrounding area. The Morse Shop had two main locations: one on State Street in downtown Hartford, and the other on Elm Street near the intersection of Elm and State Streets. The store also had a small annex on Union Avenue in north-central Hartford. In 1853, John S. Morse opened a second gunsmithing business, the Morse Rifle & Pistol Factory. This factory produced firearms for use by the military and law enforcement agencies throughout Connecticut and New York City. In 1866, Nathan Fenton became part of the ownership team at the Morse Shop alongside his brother John S., Jr.. At this point, John S.'s sons George (1867-1947) and Wesley (1868-1948) joined him ownership team as well. In 1922, George passed away; however, Wesley continued to operate the shop until his death in 1948.
Hartford, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Douglas County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,569. The community was established in 1836 as a small log settlement on the east bank of Waukesha River by John Pemberton and his family. It became a town in 1854 when it was combined with neighboring Pewaukee to form the new townsite of Hartford. The first post office was established in 1836, and the first school opened in 1840. The railroad reached Hartford in 1857 and by 1870 it had become one of the largest cities east of Denver, Colorado; it then declined rapidly until its recovery during World War II when it grew rapidly again due to manufacturing plants constructed there during that war such as Kaiser Steel Company, now part of ArcelorMittal Ltd., which created thousands of jobs throughout much of eastern Connecticut and western Massachusetts etc.; other major employers have since left or closed: Slagel's Department Store (now Macy's), Wohlgemuth Paper Products (now Koch Paper Products) numerous other local businesses including many garment manufacturers; though some light industry remains (eBay), most employment now exists within services like retail trade/commerce/banking/adminstration etc., especially healthcare, government agencies (-Edwards Air Force Base), professional services (+Lehman Brothers AG) etc..
Hartford was founded in 1824 by NicholasHartford, a civil engineer who had worked on the construction of the Erie Canal. It became a town in 1841 and was named for Roger Sherman, an American lawyer and politician who served as Mayor of Boston from 1827 to 1830. The city's first mayor was Amos Kendall. Hartford's population reached 100,000 in 1849. In 1862, it became the capital of Wisconsin Territory after the state gained its independence from Illinois.
