In 1845, John Davenport established a gristmill on Mud Lake which became an important local transportation hub for farmers west of Des Moines river - connecting with other markets through Iowa City and then Chicago via railroads before becoming an independent town by 1860 In 1861, General George Armstrong Custer found gold near present day Wauwatosa while exploring for new land to settle – resulting in Fort Dearborn within 5 miles (8 km) of Hartford & 4 miles (6 km) south of Milwaukee When Chicago annexed Racine in 1896 it added Racine to itslimits creating Racine County Hartford incorporated as a city on November 3rd 1907
