Hartford, Wisconsin is a small town in the area of Lake Michigan that straddles the border of Illinois and Wisconsin. The population as of 2010 was 3,592. It lies just south of Manitowoc and north of Green Bay on the east side of the Milwaukee River. The first Europeans to visit Hartford were French traders who traveled through the area in 1673. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1792 when John Holbrook founded a trading post at what is now known as Holbrook Heights. The original town, which straddled both sides of the Milwaukee River, was named for Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Hartnell, captain general and commander of British forces during the War for Independence. Hartford was incorporated as a Village in 1851 and became a Town in 1855. In 1907, it merged with neighboring Manitowoc to form one municipality governed by a Mayor/Council system with staggered terms; this system continued until 1959 when it was replaced by an single Mayor/Council system with mayor-elects elected at-large. From its early days as an agricultural community, Hartford has developed into an important center formanufacturing goods exported throughout North America. Its largest manufacturing sector is currently agriculture but there are also operations engaged in textiles (including sports apparel), plastics (including automotive parts), vehicle components and other industrial products. Hartford's economy has been diversified over time including service industries such as retail trade and health care; professional, scientific and technical services; government contracting; and tourism

Hartford, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Door County. The population was 362 at the 2010 census, making it the second-most populous city in Door County after Grayslake. Hartford is known for its arts and culture, as well as its manufacturing base and its location near Lake Michigan. The first permanent settler in Hartford was Daniel Boone who arrived in 1792 from Kentucky. It was originally called 'Townshend' but changed to Hartford when it became part of Canada. After several floods destroyed most of the village in 1836, settlers decided to name their new town after George Washington because they felt he had been a central figure in American history. The first post office opened in 1837, and within two years Hartford had become one of the largest towns in Wisconsin. In 1860, a group of investors led by John Prentice purchased land east of Milwaukee and founded what would become Appleton Manufacturing Company which manufactured farm machinery and other products until 1939. One of Appleton's most famous products was their Model T Ford car which became wildly popular throughout America during the 1920s and 1930s; many people consider this company to be one of the founding fathers of mass production automobiles on a large scale. In 1916, appleton merged with another industrialist named John Dorman to create Dorman-Appleton Corporation which continued making marketing oriented products until 1997 when it merged with Dow Chemical Company to form DuPont corporation. The Wright brothers were based out of Dayton Ohio at that time so some historians believe that Hartford may have been inspired by them as they took up residence there while building their 1903 model aircraft factory located just outside Dayton Ohio
