They called it Wausau because their leader, Waubonsee, had been given this name by General George Washington when he visited their territory during his march through southern Michigan in 1779-80. In 1836, Hartford incorporated as part of Racine County after land sales between Racine County settlers and Ottawa Indians resulted in an 11-mile (18 km) wide strip of land running along the river for nearly two decades southward from downtown to Green Bay; much later it would be extended to its current boundaries by annexing nearby towns like Appleton and Eau Claire. From 1860 until 1916, Hartford was also its own separate judicial district; this arrangement ended when Racine County consolidated with Milwaukee into Milwaukee County. As part of that consolidation process, most large towns within Racine County started to become annexed intoMilwaukee while smaller villages continued to exist unincorporated within RacineCounty until 1959 when they too became part of Milwaukee proper In 1860 Hartford's only store opened on State Street just east of Green Bay Road which served mostly farmers with goods brought overland from New England via Buffalo Bayou before being shipped downriver via steamboats across Lake Michigan

Hartford, Wisconsin is a small town in the far northwestern corner of the U.S., located in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. The townsite of Hartford was first settled by Germans in 1854, and soon became a center for German culture. Because of its location close to Illinois and Michigan borders, Hartford attracted many immigrants during the early decades of this century: Poles, Czechs, Slovaks and Ukrainians were all among the earliest settlers. In 1930, however, when World War II broke out, Hartford's role as a hub for German-American military activity changed abruptly. Many people who had grown up here during World War I or II left town to join the war effort; within months of Pearl Harbor being bombed on December 7th 1941 (the day after America entered World War II), Hartford's stores and businesses were closedtered along with nearly all its residents. A few hundred remaining locals continued to use their homes as shelters until February 1942 when air raids began transforming most small towns into deathtrap-like concentration camps following Germany's victory over Japan in the Pacific War. The tragedy that befell Hartford was not limited to its residents: many local businesses were destroyed or looted as well; some 100 families lost their entire lives in what was one of history’s largest Anglo-Saxon famines. In fact, so intense was Connecticut’s anti-immigrant sentiment that not even Nazi sympathizers could hide from Allied bombing campaigns throughout much of Midwest Europe - even though they may have tried to do so - while people living in villages near Dresden survived unharmed thanks largely to courage and good sense on behalf of their village elders who refused to give up their food stocks without any guarantee that they would return home again soon enough! This article does not pretend that Hartford went through an easily forgotten period post-war – indeed it has experienced more than its fair share Of economic pain since then – but it does provide an overview of some key aspects about this little known community which bears scars both physical and emotional from one time period most notably during World War II...
