Greenfield is a town in Dunn County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,773 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenfield-New Berlin–Mequon Council District. The first self-defense weapons were handguns. In 1892, Greenfield residents petitioned the Dunn County sheriff to get handguns for their protection. The sheriff granted the request and began giving out pistols to residents. In 1912, the people of Greenfield created a local militia to protect them from violence by neighboring towns. The militia used rifles and shotguns to protect themselves from raiders and other threats outside of their town limits. In 1916, the people of Greenfield passed an ordinance allowing citizens to carry firearms for personal protection within their own city limits. At that time, only 12 cities inWisconsin allowed citizens to carry firearms for personal protection purposes. In 1968, state law changed so that all municipalities inWisconsin must now allow citizens to carry handguns for personal protection purposes if they have a 3% chance of being attacked in any given year. At that time, Greenfield was one of just 10 municipalities in Wisconsin that did not yet allow citizens to carry handguns for personal protection purposes

Greenfield, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Racine County. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. Greenfield was platted in 1851 by Reuben Greenfield, who named it for his farmstead onthe west side of the river that flows through its center. It became a village in 1872 and was incorporated as a town in 1903. The name "Greenfield" comes from an early settler's claim to be on a field where green corn could be easily grown because of nearby springs. The first permanent white settlers arrived in what is now Greenfield around 1795 when Captain John Heitman and his family crossed the frozen River Koshkonon into present-day Racine County. They named their new land Prairie du Chien after one of their Indian guides, DuChien (dare you ask?). Captain Heitman's heirs continued to farm this area until 1824 when they sold the property to John Crouch and James Fenton for $1,500$. John Crouch started building cabins near today's intersection of State Highway 151 and State Highway 34 in what is now Greenfield while he awaited completion of the Milwaukee Road which would connect him with Chicago via Illinois Avenue. In 1827 he built what is now known as Hwy 51 House which still stands today within walking distance of most businesses downtownGreenfield but not open to visitors due to vandalism by vandals over time! A post office was established at Greenfeld on July 2, 1827, under the name "Milwaukee". The post office moved from its original location eastward along Wabash Avenue until it relocated westward across State Highway 151 just north of current day First National Bank Building on South Fourth Street in 1904 when it became part of Racine County! In 1840 Jacob Drees bought land northwest of present day Hwy 151 about two miles south-southwestofpresentdayFirstNationalBankBuildinginwhatisnowGreenfeldand began building cabins which are still standing today next door to current day American Legion Hall! Today this property forms much of modern day VillagegreenField! One can walk or bike directly from Jacob Drees' cabin directly onto First National Bank lot next door without ever stepping inside Hwy 151 !!

The town's first post office was established in 1840. In 1865, the towns of Appleton and Waukesha were consolidated into Greenfield. In 1912, the merger of these two towns created the city of Greenfield.
