Greenfield, Wisconsin is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. Greenfield is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Greenfield were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1847. The town was platted in 1854 and named for Captain James G. Greenfeldt of the Ulysses S. Grant Expedition who explored the area around present-day Greenfield during that year's explorations of what would become Minnesota Territory. The first post office was established in 1865 and was renamed East Aurora after Aurora, Illinois (now Aurora, Illinois). The Milwaukee Road passed through Greenfield on its way to Milwaukee and then to Chicago; as a result, many businesses there grew up with ties to the railroad industry. In 1927, when the road became part of I-94, Greenfield became one of four towns served by that highway's eastern terminus; it has since lost that connection but still features an stoplight at I-94's junction with Highway 41 near milepost 522. In 2000, a new high school opened in Greenfield – West High School – following construction of a new campus on land donated by the village of Milton Keynes just outside town limits. During World War II, Greenfield played a significant role in the war effort as it became one of the largest military towns in Wisconsin. The town was home to both U.S. Army Ordnance Corps facilities and manufacturing plants used to produce munitions for Allied forces During the war years, many soldiers lived and worked in Greenfield; its population reached nearly 500 by 1945. In 1948, when Milwaukee County was merged into Milwaukee State University District (MSU),Greenfeld became part of MSU's new campus district
