For many years Greenfield was just another stop on the Great Western Railroad between Milwaukee and Chicago; however, during World War II it became an important manufacturing center for munitions made in post-World War II America. The town's history begins with Isaac Brockman's purchase of two lots near the current intersection of Highways 93 and 453 in 1837. He began to build a cabin there as soon as he could find enough logs to do so.$2 per week provided him with food and shelter until he could start building himself a house." timber bought at auction brought little hope that anyone would ever live there but they did because they were needed for logging operations which continued even when mining ceased due to over-production." By 1840 Brockman had built four more cabins $10 each." By 1845 his property had grown into 12 acres (4 hectares). After taking possession of his land he started harvesting wood for fuel ($5) and selling boards used for fences ($12) or simply using them as building material for his new home." Eventually he also became involved in farming with some success". In 1850 Isaac Brockman had 9 farm animals including 2 cows., 3 pigs., 1 horse., 10 bushels (50 lbs.)of potatoes, 2 chestsnut trees (25 ft tall), 4 hickories (13 ft high), 6 beech trees (15 ft high), 1 apple tree (), 3 maple trees (), 8 chestnuts (), 50 lbs.(2 kg.)of pork () Isaac Brockman died suddenly while out cutting wood one day in 1851,, leaving behind 4 children ages 7-14 all orphans taken into care by friends before being sent off to live with relatives near Madison In 1865 Hemanus Junker purchased a piece adjoining Isaac Brockman’s farmstead called “Junker’s Block” which served as both a storage barn for goods brought downriver from Superior by boatloads during winter months as well as an occasional stopping place on river trips made by local farmers going upriver ." It should be noted that this area lay largely undeveloped today save for remnants of quarrying activity which can be seen along North Main Street where rubble still remains from an early 20th century brick factory ."It should also be noted that at this time Hemanus Junker was only 25 years old when he made this purchase .) Hemanus Junker spent most summers working on his farmstead while spending winters living aboard ship either at Superior or Duluth . junker died suddenly while out cutting wood one day in 1865,, leaving behind 4 children ages 7-14 all orphans taken into care by friends before being sent off to live with relatives near Madison
