The name originated from a grant by the United States government to James Greenfield for his land west of Milwaukee, which he used for farming and other purposes. East of downtown Greenfield, it forms part of the border between Racine County and Brown County. In 1853, Greenfield voters passed a resolution calling for annexation by Milwaukee due to its location on the railroads serving that city; this request was denied but didn't stop Greenfeld from becoming increasingly important as an agricultural center throughout much of the 20th century_. In 1942, during World War II, local farmers produced more food than ever before thanks to wartime production quotas set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt; however, many residents left during or after World War II because of high prices and difficult working conditions (). After 1945, when manufacturing jobs arrived in Greenefeld directly or via nearby towns such as Wauwatosa (), some residents chose not to leave their homes () while others found new opportunities outside industry ().
