Greenfield, Wisconsin is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Greenfield is derived from "Green Prairie" or "Greensboro Township". The community was founded in 1853 by Mennonites who had escaped religious persecution in Switzerland. Greenfield became a village in 1865 and then a town in 1872. The first post office opened in 1873. In 1902, the name of the town was changed to Greenfield (pronounced "green-fields") after Alfred Ladd, an early settler and manufacturer of agricultural implements and seeds in nearby Lombardstown. In 1915–1916, during World War I, Greenfield became one of several communities within miles of Chicago that were bombed by German forces as part of Operation Overlord. When the war ended two years later and American troops returned home from Europe, many people decided to stay behind and rebuild their homes following the war's devastation. As word spread about postwar reconstruction efforts throughout Kane County, more people chose to move into Greenfield than into any other community outside of Chicago; this caused what has been called "the greenfield effect." Today, Greenfield remains an economically vibrant community with its own small business district and diverse shopping options available within walking distance or by car from most parts of town including both large box stores such as Sears Holdings Corporation and JCPenney Company as well as smaller businesses catering to a variety of needs such as arts & crafts supplies dealerships as well as grocers like Kroger Super Markets Incorporated.

Greenfield is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Menomonee River. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Greenfield was founded in 1852 by settlers from New England and Vermont. It became a city in 1959. The first settler to arrive in what is now Greenfield was John Norris, who came overland from Vermont on October 24, 1851. He and his family were the only ones to settle this land that would become part of the town of Greenfield. The first house built in what would become Greenfield was a log cabin called "Norris's Cabin" which stood until 1886 when it burned down due to faulty construction. The town site was surveyed by George Stephenson on March 20, 1852 and organized as a village on May 5th of that year with Wm Halsey as its first mayor/councilman/treasurer/and justice of peace/etc... After weeks of debate and public hearings, it was decided that Greenfield should be incorporated into Racine County because there were more people living within its boundaries than any other settlement within those limits... On July 1st, 1860 Greenfield incorporation became an act of the Wisconsin State Assembly and James Fenton became its first Mayor...
