Greenfield is a town in Richland County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. The name "Greenfield" was given to the town by John P. Green in 1851. The first permanent settler in what is now Greenfield was a group of men who arrived on the Wabash River in 1836. They named their community after George Washington's estate at Mount Vernon, Virginia. In 1854, the Central Wisconsin Railway built a line from Milwaukee to Greenfield, and soon thereafter its citizens began to move into the town. By 1870, more than one-third of the population had moved into Greenfield and it became an important agricultural center with production of hay, cheese and other dairy products. The Manufacturing District sprang up around small mills that produced such items as textiles and boots. In 1916, when local leaders decided to become part of the new city of Milwaukee, Greenfield merged with neighboring towns North Range and South Range to form what is now known as Rockford Township. In 1951, when Greenfield became part of Rockford Township again following merger with nearby townships North Range and South Range (see List of municipalities in Richland County for more details), it lost its status as an independent municipality; until that time it had been governed by a governing board made up entirely of residents from within Rockford Township itself. An important aspect of township government has always been infrastructure development – primarily water system improvements and road repairs – which has helped keep Red Wing Airport open during harsh winters while also ensuring commerce flowing through town streetside businesses year-round without interruption or disruption due to weather conditions outside). Today many businesses have closed down but there are still many people working throughout the day here - making Rockford Township one very active place!
