Greenfield is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the east side of the Mississippi River just south of Green Bay. As of the 2010 census, its population was 22,898. The name "Greenfield" is first mentioned in a deed from Nicholas de Champlain to Jacques Marquette in 1624. The town was founded by Adam and Lea Greenfeld in 1854 as part of the Town of Tremont which was organized that year. In 1875, Greenfield became an independent municipality and received its own government department, sheriff and fire hall. On July 1, 1907, Greenfield merged with neighboring towns La Crosse and Fond du Lac to form the City of Milwaukee. The first school opened in Greenfield in 1855; it soon outgrew this small building and a new one was built in 1861-1862 on what is now First Street (now North Avenue). The present school building—built between 1909-1911—is also known as the Ladd House for former Superintendent Amos Laddeus Blackman. It replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by a tornado on November 25, 1886. Greenfield is a town in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first settlers in Greenfield were John and Sarah Goodspeed who arrived in 1836. They raised crops and bought land near where they lived until 1840 when they sold their holdings to James Aiken. Aiken built a gristmill here on the current site of the former White Cloud Mill on White Creek which he named after his maternal grandmother, white cloud (a type of wheat). In 1851 he married Hannah Fenton and they started raising children here also. They homesteaded 16 acres around what is now the Greenfield Square Shopping Center in 1865. The First National Bank was founded in 1870 by Jens Weiland and others from Greenfield with $5,000 capitalization from George Washingburne & Company of Chicago as its first bank president. The bank closed operations in 1881 due to financial difficulties caused by new tariffs being placed on foreign goods imported into America by President Ulysses S. Grant's administration. In 1892 Third National Bank merged with First National Bank creating what is todayWisconsinBank corporation One of Greenfield's most famous residents was grocery store founder Jens Weiland who moved from Norway to start his own grocery store at 401 N Main Street in 1915 while still living at home with his wife and two young sons- one of whom was future Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson Jr.. In 1917 Weiland decided to move production northward along I-94 so that he could open a larger store near Milwaukee but this venture failed as well due to high competition within Grocery stores across the state during that time period...the next year however saw him succeed beyond all expectations when he opened up a second store at 439 N Main Street called "JENS' THE GRILL" which became one of the largest grocers in Wisconsin after World War II ended . From this point forward almost every major grocer within sight opened up shop here including Sam’s Club and Walmart before finally closing down or merging with other stores over time (including Sears Roebuck & Co.) leaving us with just six independent grocery stores left today...homegrown produce has been an important aspect of local cuisine for generations now as have local dairy products such as cheese, eggs, butter, etc., making sure we always have something fresh available for our customers
Greenfield is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 31,854 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth-largest city in Wisconsin and the second-most populous within the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Greenfield is situated on the right bank of the Fox River, about south of Milwaukee and east of Waukesha County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Greenfield were French traders who landed there in 1642 with their ship "La Belle France". They named their new town after François de La Mothe Cadillac, Sieur de la Ville du Lac (1624–89), a French nobleman who had served as governor of Quebec City from 1672 to 1676 and then as ambassador to England from 1685 to 1689. Cadillac had been sent by Louis XIII of France to explore a route for expanding Canada westward and he explored present-day Greenfield when he arrived at its mouth on September 5, 1642. The town was platted in 1793 by John Kinnaird and others under an act approved by the legislature on March 10th that year; it name probably derived from Cadillac's official title as Sieur de la Ville du Lac (and not vice versa). At that time it consisted of two small villages – Cottage Grove to the north and Centerville to the south – plus several farmsteads scattered around what are now central streets such as State Street, Dearborn Street, Federal Street, Third Avenue (now I-94) and Lake Michigan Drive. In 1835 Greenfield incorporated as a village; its boundaries changed only slightly until 1959 when they were revised again because most of present day Milwaukee lay within its original municipal limits which included much of downtown Greenfield including Kinnaird Park today's business district anchored by The Star newspaper building once occupied by Sears & Roebuck before being pulled down for development into Eastern Credit Union Plaza). In 1836 Greenfield erected a wooden frame courthouse which burned down in 1839 but was replaced no later than 1840 with another frame courthouse built by Daniel Freeman which still stands today on North 4th Street near South Division (now University) Avenue; this courthouse also burned down in 1849 but was replaced no later than 1850 with a moreframe courthouse built by George Stephenson which still stands today on North 5thStreet near South Waterfront Avenue; this courthouse also burned down in 1904 but was replaced no later than 1905 with a more recent frame court house designed by architect George Biddle which currently stands on State Street between Third Avenue (now I-94) and Lake Michigan Drive just across from Kinnaird Park - becoming one of only few remaining examples from those early decades dating back to 1800s buildings designed specifically for use within an urban setting outside an agricultural township or rural community - visible even from Interstate 94 Business Channel just outside downtown Milwaukee www . greenfieldsherald .com/
