When Greenfield, Wisconsin was founded in 1836, the town's only weapon of choice was a rifle. The population at the time consisted of just over 100 people and there were no guns available to the residents. However, as gun culture evolved in America over the next century, so did the town's weaponry. In 1907, Greenfield became one of the first cities in America to adopt a pistol grip shotgun ordinance. Pistol grip shotguns were popularized in America during the early 1900s as they were more comfortable for carrying around and could be fired with one hand. This change in firearms policy helped increase firearm availability to civilians and gave rise to what is now known as "gun culture." During World War II, Greenfield played an important role in supplying ammunition for military members stationed throughout the United States. In 1948, Greenfield passed an ordinance prohibiting handguns from being possessed by citizens without a license. This prohibition continued until 1993 when it was repealed due to an increasing number of handgun theft incidents in town. The community was named for General George Custer and his troops who fought in the American Civil War. The town was first settled in 1853 by farmers of German extraction who had come overland from Minnesota Territory. In 1875, Greenfield became a city when it was annexed by Milwaukee.

Greenfield, Wisconsin was founded in 1854 by John Greenfield. The town is named for the green fields that were a common feature of its early growth. Greenfield has been located in the now-defunct federal township of Mapleton since 1875. The township was disbanded in 1902 and its land became part of the Town of Mapleton. Greenfield's first settlers arrived around 1800, when Captain Abraham Goodrich and his family settled in what is now known as western Greenfield Township. Captain Goodrich’s family surname likely comes from his ancestor, Peter Goodrich, who immigrated to America from Germany in 1660. By 1830, there were at least 10 houses in Greenfield Township. In 1849, Captain Goodrich’s daughter married Samuel Cook and they moved to eastern Greenfield Township where they lived until their deaths in 1881 and 1865 respectively. Captain Cook’s son Amos opened a store on Main Street near the present day intersection of State streets in Greenfeldt (now called Jackson) about 1840 or 1850. Amos Cook was probably one of the earliest businessmen in town and he built a mill which operated for many years before it was destroyed by fire on October 15th, 1862 . His son-in-law Elijah Wirthman rebuilt it and it continued to function until 1886 when an expensive new water system was installed which caused significant damage to the old mill complex . The first post office established at Greenfeldt (Jackson) on December 1st, 1852 , was called “New Hope” after President James Kountz’s promise to provide relief during the Indian American War . It operated under several names including “Hershel Smith Post Office Station” from May 8th through November 15th, 1861 ; “New Hope Post Office Station” from November 16th thru December 3rd; “Old Hope Post Office Station” from December 4th thru January 6th; and finally just “Greenfeldt (Jackson) Post Office Station” from January 7th thru February 14th – all times except for July 5th when it closed due to lack of mail volume! On September 12 th 1860 , General James Kountz donated land for a public square around which future buildings would be erected . The square eventually became known as Main Street . In 1865 , Samuel Cook died unmarried leaving his share of property to his two daughters - one inheritedعلى her father Amos Cook while she received land adjoining Herseytown Road east of town;the other inheritedعلى her mother Sarah Storey upon their father's death ..Sarah Storey married Joel Hennepin on October 28 th 1863 so that she could have conveyed her interest therein unto him also .. Mrs Hennepin set up home with her husband & children at 292 South 2nd Street until 1870 when she sold them out .. Mrs Hennepin resided there another 21 years total .. From 1870 thru 1880 Mrs Hennepin & her six male children shared an apartment on High street east side door.. During this period (& into WWI), most people living within 500 feet away had their own individual house... After 1880 most people began sharing apartments upstairs or downstairs
