Greenfield is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the north side of the Kettle River. The population was 4,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Greenfield was founded in 1836 by Solomon Green and his family, who came from England to what is now eastern Wisconsin. The first settler in Greenfield was Lewis Green, who arrived in 1837 and built a log cabin on Oak Creek Dam across from today's intersection of State Highway 7 and State Highway 31. The village that grew up around Greenfield was called "Neenah" after one of Solomon's daughters. In 1853, Neenah merged with nearby Whitehall to form the town of Whitehall-Neenah-Greenfield (renamed for Solomon Greene). At its peak, Whitehall had a population of about 1,200 people; however, it fell rapidly due to population loss and replacement by new townships formed during the American Civil War: West Uniontown (1865), East Uniontown (1868), Menomonee Falls (1872), North Uniontown (1874), blockhouse Bayou City (1881) and finally Blackstone Heights (1885). In 1865, Greenfield became an organized town when it joined with neighboring West Uniontown to form Racine County. However, Racine County disbanded soon afterward when most of its territory were absorbed by neighboring Milwaukee County. By 1890, Greenfield had only 500 residents remaining; however, it continued to grow until its incorporation as a city in 1912. From 1912 through 1968, Greenfield served as both the capital city and seat of government for Racine County before becoming an unincorporated community again until it rejoined Racine County as an incorporated community in 1998. Today’s greenfields began developing along streams that flow into Kettle River beginning about two decades ago thanks to advances made by farmers using tillage methods such as flooding or herbicide applications which improved water clarity while also suppressing weeds or grasses that could compete with crops grown on more fertile soils elsewhere within our county or outside our boundaries altogether."
