Greenfield is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. Ammunition production started in the 1840s and continued into the early 20th century. In Greenfield, ammunition manufacturing took place on three different sites: one from 1845-1848 was located on Main Street; another from 1851-1854 was at West Park Avenue; and a third from 1857-1859 was at East Park Avenue. Ammunition production stopped in 1923 due to World War I. However, some of the old buildings still stand today as part of the American Red Cross headquarters complex on North First Street which dates back to 1907. Some of Greenfield's most famous residents include General James K. Polk (USA), Mayor John Hodge (DFL), Congressman Oscar Wickersham (DFL), and Dr. Charles Lindbergh (USA).

Greenfield is the most populous municipality in Marquette County and one of eight municipalities that make up the La Crosse metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Greenfield was a man named James Naulls who arrived on April 20, 1836. He and his family were the first white people to reside in what is now Greenfield. The town was organized on December 3, 1854 by Peter J. Hines as a village. It initially consisted of just a few hundred residents; however, it grew rapidly due to its strategic location and natural resources - including farmland, forests, water supplies and minerals - which made it an attractive destination for settlers. By 1880, Greenfield had over 2,000 residents and had started to develop into a vibrant community with its own newspaper (the "Greenfield Gazette"), schools (including one high school), churches (including one Baptist church), businesses (such as a grocery store and three machine shops) and theaters (such as the "Civic Opera House"). The early years of the 20th century were difficult for Greenfeldtians due to prohibitionism legislation passed by Congress in 1913 which limited drinking alcohol within states with such laws. However, through hard work and determination locals managed to overcome many challenges during this time period – including becoming leaders in local food production techniques such as canning fruits/vegetables or growing flowers indoors – while also maintaining their close-knit community spirit throughout tough times. In 1931–1932 voters passed an ordinance establishing zoning regulations that would define how much land each household could purchase within certain boundaries; this led to increased density in Greenfeldt but also helped preserve its character as a small-town America setting despite advances made by nearby cities such as Milwaukee and La Crosse during this time period. Greenfield, Wisconsin is a small town in the town of Greenfield, Wisconsin. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is located in southern Polk County on the east side of the Mississippi River. It has a historic architecture and culture that can be seen in its buildings and people. The first permanent settler in Greenfield was James Halsey who arrived with his family in 1837. By 1840, there were twelve families living here. The first school was built on the site of what is now First United Methodist Church in 1845 and it served as a village meeting house until 1857 when it became an independent school district. In 1862, Greenfield voted to become part of the new state of Minnesota but due to lack of support from other towns within the county they remained a separate municipality until 1865 when they merged into Polk County. In 1902, Orville Averill founded Averill Dairy which still operates today as one of America's most successful dairy farms. He also helped found the American Legion Post No 184 here which still meets today Greenfield played an important role during World War I with many residents helping out with their local militia units or joining up for service overseas. After World War I ended, many businesses closed down and many residents left but some returned and began to rebuild what had been lost including becoming one of only two communities (the other being Appleton) to maintain their downtown core after being destroyed by fire in 1925-1926 After years of growth and development over time Greenfield officially became a city on April 3rd, 2002 following approval by voters via referendum Many changes have occurred throughout these years such as reducing its size from its original 2 square miles to just under half that size; however much remains unchanged such as its rich history and architecture
Greenfield was founded in 1837 by John Green and his wife, Sarah. The town became a village in 1858, and was named for Greenfield County, Illinois. In 1916, the name of the town was changed to Appleton after its incorporation into the Wisconsin State System of Education.
