Greendale is a town in Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Racine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Greendale was John Beaumont who arrived in 1836. The first store was built in 1847 by Isaac Currier and it remained in business until 1922. The first school was built on what is now Main Street in Greendale in 1868 and it served as a local jail from 1876 to 1888. In 1902, the community started to build their own churches with the help of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1907, Greendale got its own post office which continued to serve until 1974. In 1916, Grange Park Community Farm began operations and has been running since then. It provides significant support for many local farmers and their families including hay production, dairy farming, corn harvesting, turkey hunting and other outdoor activities. There are also several small businesses located around Grange Park that provide services such as gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants close by for residents and tourists alike! In 1853, George Washington Greeland moved to greendale from Grand Rapids Michigan where he had been living since 1800 when he purchased 640 acres west oftown center from David Sibley for $25 per acre ($2 million dollars today). soon after arriving, he began trading goods with farmers in neighboring towns as well as selling meat products direct to customers through his farm animals which were shipped by boat downriver to Green Bay.. With only five or six residents within easy walking distance of everything that greendale had to offer such as flour mills, churches, schools & stores etc., growth could not be sustained without outside funding In 1860 when reorganized by state government under territorial jurisdiction with its own government structure under Mayor Edward Ritchie “greendelwisconsin” nameakeplaceholder elected directly byutes subject only unto Governor Isham Jones…the first mayor under this new arrangement functioned more like an appointed trusteeship than anything else…..GREENDELWISCONSIN November 1st 1860 A group led by Reverend Davenport White formed an agricultural society known as “The Knights Of Columbus” which would later become one of GREENDELWISCONSIN most powerful civic groups….
