Greendale is a village in the town of Greendale, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 578 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kenosha County, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Greendale was John Greenleaf Whipple in 1836. For many years it was simply known as "Greenleaf". In 1868, the post office moved from Milwaukee to Greendale and began to use the name "Dane County". In 1888, it changed its name again to "Greendale", after one of its trustees purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land north of Greendale for $4,000. In 1916, the community had a population of 207 people and an improved schoolhouse with a two-story addition was built. That same year, freight service began from Dane County Railroad Station on State Highway 3 west to Greandiseport on the Chicago Great Western Railway (CGWR). The Village Board acquired additional property east of present day Main Street in 1922 and developed it into a small subdivision called Glenview Park which included residences as well as a swimming pool and tennis Courts. A new school opened in 1951 which replaced an earlier building that had been destroyed by fire. The original barn also served as both a structure used for storage and an education center during this time period before being torn down in 1984 to make way for new development within Glenview Park.
