The store offered fresh produce, meat, bakery products and cigarettes to consumers through an intricate system of rationing that remains today. The early 20th century was difficult for many farmers in centralWisconsin due to Great Depression-era policies implemented by Franklin D Roosevelt that discouraged production and created tight credit conditions among businesses across America. However, The Grapeseed Trust Company stands as an example of how successful cooperation can be when faced with adversity. In 1935, King Features Syndicate merged into Hearst Corporation; however, The GrapeseedTrustCompany continued operations until 1991 when it merged into Ahold Incorporated—the largest supermarket chain in North America at that time

The village was organized on February 17, 1872, when the town of Greendale west of Dodge City was combined with those in east and south Dodge City. The first post office at Greendale opened on March 13, 1872. A gristmill and sawmill were built in 1875 and 1889 respectively. The first store was built in 1904. Greendale's first school was a one-room building erected on thesite of an earlier Methodist church that had been destroyed by a fire six years earlier. In 1895 the village voted to build its own school which began operation that year. The Village School District #1 operated Greendale's schools until it merged into Green Bay Schools district #3 in 2013. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all land.

The first Europeans to visit Greendale were fur traders in the early 18th century. A small log cabin was built in 1798 by Abram and Anna Kapp as a farmstead for their family. They also started a store in Greendale in 1800. In 1836, John Wirth built a gristmill on the river near present-day Greendale High School. In 1837, Jno. Ransom founded the village of Greendale on land that he had bought from Abram Kapp. It took two years for everyone to find residents and build homes; by 1840, there were about 25 people living in Greendale. In 1846, John Friesen established a blacksmith shop and wagon workshop near present-day Green Bay Road and White River Boulevard. He also started a grocery store and post office there. By 1850, there were over 100 people living in Greendale. The town was incorporated on March 3, 1852 under the name of "Village of Green Bay". The first mayor was George Sennholz (1856-58). In 1865–1966, Greendale became part of Racine County before being merged into Dane County on January 1, 1998. In 1916–1917 several businesses closed due to World War I: Grist Millinery & Shirt Mfg., Woolen Mills Ltd., Ice Cream Parlour & Cake Shop. After World War II many families moved out ofGreendale because of cheap labor opportunities available outside of Wisconsin during the postwar boom period. Some properties still stand today: Grange House (1892), Village Hall (1906), Mrs Lindholm's Bakery (1927), Masonic Temple Number One (1963), Park Manor Apartments (1977).
