Greendale is a village in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Greendale was platted in 1854 and named for General George Greyson, commander of Union troops during the Black Hawk War. The Village of Greendale was organized on February 14, 1855 by Order of the Peace officers from east to west in Door County. The first meeting took place at the home of captain John Hutton. On March 2nd a meeting was held under the presidency of Abram Ransom and it voted to establish an office of postmaster which Nathan Beardsley filled on May 15th. The first store opened in Greendale on October 8th, 1856 by Solomon Weisbrod & Sons with $5 worth of merchandise purchased from Jno Carneybaugh & Son located on First Street. A store had been established in town but was burned down by fire just before it could be occupied and new stores were built on both Main Street and Second Avenue soon after this event. In 1861 Isaac Mower became head resident tailor for all residents within Greendale limits as well as Town Clerk and continued to do so until 1865 when he succeeded his brother Amos as village president effective November 1st that year followed by his wife Sarah until their death in 1879 following five years term unexpired. They are buried together at Mount Zion Cemetery near West Allis On December 6th 1860 Captain John Hutton donated land north of Main Street for a schoolhouse which would serve all grades from Kindergarten through High School making Greendale one of the few villages where education was available free to citizens throughout its bounds even up into adulthood including children born after January 1st 1860 continuing this tradition until 1969 when state funding stopped providing such benefits statewide . One hundred thirty-six students attended school each day between 1870-1887 thanks to Captain John Hutton’s donation! With Grades Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth grade there were two full time teachers (and later three part time) while also twelve boarders who shared use& accommodation with parents or guardians costing an additional $1 per week each bringing total teacher costs up to $10 per pupil during these years In 1966 construction began on what would become known as “the great white building” becoming operational that same year complete with kindergarten classes starting September 17th followed by 4th grade classrooms then finally 7th grade classes beginning fall term 1971 only lasting one semester due to budgetary restrictions . When completed it housed seven classrooms with associated offices/hallways totaling 24′X36′ making it one of largest schools ever constructed in Door County ! As mentioned earlier Grades 9-12 currently attend Community School located adjacent (but not contiguous) to this large building providing quality instruction concurrently with music rehearsals using adjoining facilities also funded & managed by Village government
