When General James Kapp recommended settling the area around Lake Michigan, Fitch lobbied hard to get his land selected as one of four townships to be formed within Racine County; but he lost out to Waukegan on November 5, 1836. The township became an actual town on December 12, 1847 when it voted unanimously to be organized into a city under the name "Green Bay." On February 14th 1896, GreenBay became part of the new Milwaukee metropolitan area which included all south side counties except Racine County and most of Dane County as well as most of Kenosha County includingMilwaukee itself!
