Grafton is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Grafton was founded in 1873 by John Fenton and his wife, Lucy. It is located on the north shore of Lake Michigan. Grafton is home to the Grafton State Fairgrounds and the Grafton Park District. The first settlers in what would become Grafton were John Fenton and his wife Lucy who came to the area from Canada in 1853. They named their new town after their son-in-law, General George Armstrong Custer who had died during the American Civil War two years earlier. In 1873 John Fenton married Clarissa Murchison and they began farming land that now includes most of the town. The Town of Grafton was created with a Act of Congress on July 1, 1875 from a group of towns that had banded together to resist an act by Governor Zachary Taylor giving away free land to settlers in Door County for farm expansion purposes. The town site included parts of present day Waukesha and Racine counties as well as part of Milwaukee County at that time. The first store in what would become Grafton opened its doors on Main Street on October 15th, 1875 under the name “Fenton”s grocery store which sat across from present day Waukesha Avenue on Main Street for over fifty years until it closed its doors in 1984 due to fire damage; however it still remains listed on county property as a historic building today! In 1912 when prohibition laws were passed along with other social changes throughout America many farmers decided to start using alcohol rather than face criminal charges when selling or consuming liquor; this led to increased crime rates within local communities which caused businesses such as grocery stores not being able to sell liquor until 1933 when Prohibition ended nationwide! “GRAFTON — A CENTURY OF PROGRESS” When looking back over one hundred years there have been numerous milestones throughout this time including: • First Store open - October 15th 1865 • incorporation into Door County - July 1st 1975 • Development & growth of downtown - Early 20th century • Progress made with respect to education & health care during this time – early 20th century
Grafton was first settled in 1839 by the Lipscomb family. The town was founded on a farmstead which was later moved to its present location. The first post office in Grafton was established in 1845. In 1868, the town became a city and has since grown large with many businesses and residents. Grafton is home to the Grafton Creamery, which is one of Wisconsin's oldest continuously operating businesses.
